The Balch Lab at Stanford is accepting applications for a highly motivated and collaborative Postdoctoral Fellow with an interest in optics, device physics, and/or environmental sensor integration for ocean observation.

We are an interdisciplinary group of physicists, engineers, and oceanographers interested in advancing our understanding of ocean science, water sustainability, and climate resilience. Our lab develops optical techniques based on spectroscopy, microscopy, and nanophotonics that can enable quantitative and high-resolution molecular measurements in marine and freshwater environments in situ.

Successful candidates will be founding members of the Balch Lab. As such, we are looking for candidates who are interested in launching a project from the ground-up, are effective in small teams, and are excellent communicators.

Successful candidates will join a vibrant interdisciplinary community across science, engineering, and sustainability at Stanford. Fellows will have access to world-class nanofabrication and characterization facilities (e.g. Nano@Stanford, Stanford PRL), career development resources, and competitive benefits and salary commensurate with experience.

Required Qualifications:
  • PhD in physics, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, oceanography, bioengineering, or related fields.
  • Proven research and/or professional experience in two or more of the following: optics, spectroscopy, microscopy, nanophotonics, device physics, field work and sensor integration.
  • Strong coding and debugging skills.
  • Excellent communication, documentation capabilities and a demonstrated track record of publication.
  • An enthusiasm for developing new measurements, working in interdisciplinary teams, and a strong curiosity to understand fundamental mechanisms.
