1. Fully Funded PhD in stabilizing measures for power systems

Summary of Funded PhD Program

Small oscillations (unwanted swings) in the turbine during operation can be amplified in the generator and cause the output to fluctuate significantly and can lead to mechanical damage. In order to avoid the phenomenon, models are needed that describe reality satisfactorily. Questions can then be asked of these models about how to reduce the swinging so that our electricity system becomes even more reliable of supply and electricity producers can avoid problems in their power stations.

2. Fully Funded PhD in nutrition science

Summary of Funded PhD Program

In Sweden, the number of food poisonings is estimated to be half a million per year, but the dark figure is large. For vulnerable groups, food poisoning can be life-threatening, causing hospitalization and death, and there is no given control point that ensures consumers’ knowledge of food safety. International research shows that vulnerable risk groups may receive inconsistent, no or incorrect information about food safety from health care professionals. Inadequate knowledge of food safety reduces the ability to transmit accurate information. There is a research gap precisely when it comes to nursing staff’s knowledge, attitudes and behavior in relation to food safety.

4. Fully Funded PhD in combinatorial optimization with applications in computerized image processing

Summary of Funded PhD Program

In this project, we focus on a special class of combinatorial optimization problems, called lexicographic max-ordering (Lex-MO) optimization problems. Our interest in this class of problems is motivated by a recent discovery made by our team: Many optimization problems that are currently considered infeasible to solve in practical time (NP-hard) can be solved in low-order polynomial time if we recast them as Lex-MO problems! This includes many problems that naturally occur in practical applications.

7. Fully Funded PhD in Materials Physics

Summary of Funded PhD Program

The Materials Physics division within the Department of Physics and Astronomy investigates advanced materials for applications in fusion energy, smart windows, hydrogen storage & nanoelectronics. Within the division, our group uses beams of swift ions to link structure and composition on a true atomistic scale with physical properties and macroscopic functionality is one of the main research tools within the division. We also perform fundamental investigations of the interaction of ions in matter to obtain a better understanding of the underlying physics and improved methods. These methods permit to determine concentrations and depth profiles of atoms and molecules in a material with very high accuracy for samples from biological, environmental and technological contexts.

10. Fully Funded PhD in spin and orbital electronics

Summary of Funded PhD Program

Harnessing both spin and orbital angular momentum, electrons offer two powerful properties for advancing spintronics and orbitronics—fields poised to revolutionize information technology. This holds enormous potential for breakthroughs such as ultrahigh-density memory and precision quantum sensing. The discovery of graphene and other 2D materials has sparked innovation in these areas. This project seeks to understand and develop new charge, spin, and orbital devices, such as efficient spintronic devices using 2D materials, moving toward spin-integrated circuits, or realizing new quantum phases for advanced quantum sensors.

11. Fully Funded PhD in Medical Cell Biology

Summary of Funded PhD Program

My research also shows that the complexity and structural integrity of mucins and mucus gels with specific material properties are important to their function [1-5]. In this PhD project, the candidate will develop mucin gels with tailored properties for use as an antiviral lubricant, which can trap viral particles within the gels and excrete them from the epithelium before the viral particles reach the epithelium, and for islet transplantation, where the gels can microencapsulate islets within gel microdroplets, establish an immune-privileged niche upon transplantation, and thereby enable adequate re-vascularisation. In brief, purified mucins will be assembled into “mucus-like” gels, “stable” mucin gels, and gel microdroplets. The correlation between gel properties and bioapplications will be assessed using in vitro and in vivo biological assays.

12. Fully Funded PhD in materials science with focus on accelerated exploration of next-generation energy materials

Summary of Funded PhD Program

Automation and AI are becoming increasingly widespread in materials science, creating new opportunities for knowledge generation that can solve today’s most pressing challenges. A key area is the discovery of new materials for green energy, communication, batteries, and computing, for example. In this context, multielement inorganic materials such as chalcogenides are promising candidates for sustainable and scalable technologies. The problem is that there are many candidates to explore, and material properties are highly sensitive to synthesis methods and composition. Powerful and reliable experimental methods are required to identify and compare promising new materials among the thousands of possibilities.
