Summary of Funded PhD Program

The project will investigate patterns of hyperactivity using electrophysiological methods, which occur with aging and lead to altered long-range and local synaptic function and subsequent aberrant network excitability along with associated memory deficits. Specifically, the candidate will investigate the underlying contribution of cell-type specific projections within hippocampal-cortical circuits in mice and characterize the synaptic changes within long-range versus local cortical circuits across aging. The candidate will gain valuable experience not only with various electrophysiological techniques, such as patch clamp recording and multielectrode arrays (MEA), but also with molecular cell identification and single-/two-photon imaging techniques.

3. Fully Funded PhD in Self-Assembled Rolled-Up Microcoils for Solid-State Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy

Summary of Funded PhD Program

We want to investigate samples that exhibit unconventional superconductivity or unusual magnetic ground states, such as spin liquids. Such new magnetic states can be obtained by suppressing conventional magnetic order by introduction of quantum fluctuations, frustration, or competing interactions. The aim of the doctoral research is an experimental study of new emerging magnetic or superconducting materials with strong electronic correlations or magnetic frustration, especially those involving topological features such as spin liquids or phases close to them. The microcoils will help with the study of samples, which are only available as tiny single crystals, exfoliated flakes, or in small quantities. Part of this project is the preparation of such microcoils by wafer scale fabrication.

Summary of Funded PhD Program

The task of the PhD student will be to participate in the development of new rocket-borne sensors, calibrate them in the laboratory, advise undergraduate students, prepare the instruments for and control them during rocket field campaigns in Northern Scandinavia, and process the data. Besides the specific topics of our Department, the students are expected to be in close interaction with colleagues and students from the other two IAP Departments, for example, via cross-departmental activities.

8. Fully Funded PhD in Root Anatomy

Summary of Funded PhD Program

The research group Genetics and Physiology of Root Development studies crop root anatomical and architectural traits. Research is mainly focused on cereals including barley, wheat, and maize. We aim to leverage high-throughput phenotyping to create knowledge about plant function at the physiological level and use forward genetics approaches to unravel the genetic architecture of root traits. Our most recent project is to characterize the function and genetic control of root anatomical (specifically cortical) traits in maize to enhance plant nitrogen stress tolerance. You will closely collaborate with other researchers in the project and group, including experts in genetics and rhizosphere biology.

Summary of Funded PhD Program

Information Service Engineering (ISE) at FIZ Karlsruhe, led by Prof. Dr. Harald Sack, investigates models and methods for efficient semantic indexing, aggregation, linking and retrieval of comprehensive heterogeneous and distributed data sources. To this end, both statistical and linguistic analysis methods (NLP) as well as machine learning in combination with symbolic knowledge representation are applied (Hybrid AI). ISE research relies and extends on knowledge representation standards developed for the Semantic Web. ISE research application areas include, but are not limited to, solutions for knowledge extraction, semantic annotation, semantic and exploratory search, as well as recommender systems and question answering.

Summary of Funded PhD Program

The chemical characteristic time (CCT) is the time during which the concentration of a given constituent changes by a factor e. The concept of characteristic times is widely used: i) to understand which factors – advection, turbulence or chemistry – are important for changes in a given chemical compound in a given region at a given time, ii) to identify which sources of atmospheric variability, e.g. planetary waves (PWs), gravity waves (GWs), tides, result in variations of a given chemical compound, iii) to assess the degree to which chemical constituents are in their equilibrium, which is often an important assumption to construct climate change scenarios.

12. Fully Funded PhD in Biological Oceanography

Summary of Funded PhD Program

The PhD is conducted within the framework of the DFG project “BALTICMAGS,” which investigates the role of magnetotactic bacteria in the Baltic Sea. The aim of the project is to explore the distribution and behavior of these bacteria to better understand their impact on chemical cycles, particularly the phosphorus cycle. The planned research includes: analyzing the frequency, distribution, and polyphosphate storage of these bacteria compared to chemical profiles, especially phosphate; detailed characterization of the taxonomic and morphological diversity of magnetotactic bacteria throughout the depth of the chemocline, including the analysis of specific inclusions; and describing the chemotactic behavior of these bacteria in terms of their orientation and swimming behavior under natural conditions and dependent on chemical conditions.

Summary of Funded PhD Program

The BMBF-funded project, AI- and citizen science-supported monitoring of certified biodiversity projects (KICS-Zert), aims at the development of an artificial intelligence (AI) and citizen science-supported biodiversity monitoring method to be used for certifying biodiversity conservation projects. The AI tool to be developed will analyse the complexity of ecosystems, the multi-taxonomic species composition (e.g. vegetation, insects and birds) and the intensity of agricultural land use using smartphone images and videos. For this, we need a research associate who will define indicators that are ecologically and technically sound and meet the certification requirements of farmers and companies.
