Job Description

Job Description: A prestigious first-year fellowship at MIT, intended to recruit outstanding new graduate students. Established in 1999 by MIT’s president and provost, it fully funds the fellow’s first year to showcase MIT’s support for excellence.

Role Description: Fellows are newly admitted MIT graduate students (typically Ph.D. candidates). They continue their regular academic program, with the fellowship covering their first-year expenses so they can focus on transitioning to MIT.

Application Cycle: Annual (about 120 fellowships awarded per year).

What You’ll Need: Cannot apply directly; must be nominated by your department or school dean. Nominees are selected from the most outstanding admitted students worldwide. Citizenship is not required (open to all), but awards are intended for new (incoming) graduate students.

Preferred or Required Qualifications: Exceptional academic and research potential. Nominees are chosen by department heads and approved by MIT’s President and Provost. Selection emphasizes worldwide excellence.

Benefits and Perks: Full tuition, full health insurance, and a 9-month stipend at the approved GRA rate for MIT’s S&E students (currently not to exceed the Ph.D. stipend). Fellows also receive a special certificate signed by the MIT president. These benefits cover the first academic year only.

Where and How You Can Apply: Nomination-only. Contact your graduate program or MIT’s Office of Graduate Education for details on the Presidential Fellows nomination process. Visit MIT OGE’s Presidential Fellowship page for more information.
