The Cal-EIS Fellowship, administered by the California Department of Public Health (CDPH), is a one-year, full-time training program designed to prepare early-career epidemiologists for leadership roles in public health within California. Established in 1989, the program offers hands-on experience in applied epidemiology through placements in state or local health departments across California. Fellows work under the guidance of experienced epidemiologist preceptors, engaging in real-world public health investigations and initiatives.

Role Description:
Cal-EIS Fellows undertake a variety of responsibilities, including:

  • Field Investigations: Participate in outbreak responses and epidemiologic studies addressing public health issues such as infectious diseases, chronic conditions, environmental health, and maternal and child health.

  • Data Analysis: Collect, analyze, and interpret public health data to inform policy and program development.

  • Program Evaluation: Assess the effectiveness of public health programs and interventions.

  • Reporting and Communication: Prepare reports, presentations, and scientific manuscripts to communicate findings to stakeholders and the public.

  • Professional Development: Attend mandatory conferences, including the California Conference of Local Health Officers (CCLHO) Annual Meeting and the California Conference of Local Health Data Managers and Epidemiologists (CCLHDME) Annual Meeting, where fellows present their work.

  • Application Cycle: Annually

What You’ll Need:

  • A master’s degree in public health or a related field (e.g., MPH, MS, PhD, MD, DDS, DVM) with coursework in epidemiology and biostatistics.

  • Strong interest in applied epidemiology and public health practice.

  • U.S. citizenship or legal authorization to work in the United States.

  • Willingness to relocate within California for the duration of the fellowship.

Preferred or Required Qualifications:

  • Proficiency in statistical software such as R, SAS, or ArcGIS.

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.

  • Ability to work collaboratively in multidisciplinary teams.

  • Demonstrated commitment to public service and health equity.

Benefits and Perks:
