With global energy demand projected to increase by 47% by 2050, improving energy efficiency is crucial for transitioning to a low carbon economy. While technological progress is a precondition, ultimately, the “human factor” determines energy consumption. Traditional technical and economic frameworks fail to account for why individuals are not adopting seemingly cost-effective energy-saving technologies or reacting to existing energy policy. Understanding what drives this gap is essential for effective policy targeting and achieving urgent energy savings. Are people paying attention to electricity prices and if yes, do they change their habits? Are the current energy policies we have effective and fair? What behavioral or cognitive barriers are there when it comes to changing energy consumption behavior or adopting energy-efficient technology?

The successful candidate will engage in developing innovative methods for interpreting and explaining the inner workings of natural language processing models. 6. 03 Fully Funded PhD in Machine Learning

Summary of Funded PhD Program

The project will explore the impact and mitigation of adversarial threats in online learning, specifically in distributed (a.k.a. federated) settings. Growing interest in public-domain utilization of federated learning, such as in healthcare and media recommendation, has led to significant developments in protecting models against adversarial manipulation in the training phase. Prior work, however, largely focuses on supervised learning and ignores the paradigm of online learning. The latter is becoming more relevant in this age of language models, where we seek to adapt models on the fly, using real-time information. To prevent these language models from getting manipulated by poisonous or erroneous information (a.k.a. misinformation), it is of critical importance to develop robust online learning algorithms.

Summary of Funded PhD Program

The project will accelerate the green transition through development and tests of new neutron and synchrotron x-ray instrumentation for optimisation of Power-to-X processes and materials. The main contributions to the project from the fellow will be:

  • Designing digital twins of the proposed instrumentation in the open-source simulation environments McStas and McXtrace.
  • Use the developed models to train machine learning algorithms to make fast predictions of experimental performance and background behaviour.
  • Test the predictions against actual measurement of the new instrumentation and use these findings to finetune the algorithms.

With the proposed project, we will study the role of liquid-liquid phase separation in facilitating DNA repair processes in the cell nucleus as a model to establish a fundamental biological understanding of how biomolecular droplets allow the cell to orchestrate its biochemical processes. We will achieve this through a cross-disciplinary effort that combines molecular genetics and state-of-the-art microscopy with biophysical modelling and computational simulations. The model approach will be inspired from statistical physics and the theory of phase transitions and droplet formation. By the introduction of active chemical reactions, we will study the physics of droplet formation and maintenance in time and space.

The projects concern safety when siRNAs and small peptides are applied as pesticides in plants and the aim is to develop the computational tools and analyses that will contribute to an environmental risk assessment framework for new bio-based plant protection products (PPPs). The PhD candidate will work approximately one third of the time on the Klimagødning and two thirds of the time on the PHISHES projects. The project KlimaGødning aims to to develop an improved N modeling approch that can calculate reliable estimates of N2O emissions at the field level from soil biogeophysical conditions and farm activity data, especially related to mineral and organic N fertilisation. Summary of Funded PhD Program

The main tasks in the PhD project will be to bioinformatically investigate the tumor microenvironment in histologically distinct glioblastoma and meningioma samples and correlate these findings with clinical outcomes. Part of the project will also cover patient-derived animal models. The ideal candidate should have a background in biological sciences and have experience in either data analysis of high-plex spatial transcriptomics or single-cell/nuclei RNA sequencing or have experience in R or python.
