Do you have a Master’s degree and are looking for fully funded PhD opportunities? University of Bern, Switzerland is now accepting applications for several funded PhD programs across a range of research areas.
1. Fully Funded PhD in Orbit & Gravity Field Recovery
Summary of Funded PhD Program
The group “Satellite Geodesy” of the Astronomical Institute of the University of Bern (AIUB) offers the position for a Ph.D. Candidate. The focus will be on the determination of time-variable Earth’s gravity fields from real GNSS data from CubeSat constellations and scientific Low Earth Orbiting (LEO) satellite missions. Today, more and more commercial satellites equipped with dual-frequency GNSS receivers are launched, eg, from Spire Global, a satellite-powered data company that uses a large, distributed constellation of multi-payload nano-satellites. These satellites have the potential to provide high-temporal-resolution measurements through entire CubeSat constellations, which can mitigate existing data gaps and improve Earth science phenomena by sustained observations with increased spatial and temporal resolution.

4. Fully Funded PhD
Summary of Funded PhD Program
In our recent paper (https://rdcu.be/dYS4q), we documented important limitations of the available tools for signature analysis. We are now looking for applicants who will develop new algorithms specifically designed to overcome the identified shortcomings. These algorithms will be implemented as software packages that will improve and simplify the analysis of mutational signatures for the broad community of researchers and other practitioners. This will help to effectively use the costly sequencing data and thus enable discoveries and therapeutic decisions that would otherwise be impossible.

5. Fully Funded PhD in Organs-on-Chip
Summary of Funded PhD Program
We are an interdisciplinary research group, the Organs-on-Chip Technologies (OOC) Lab of the ARTORG Center for Biomedical Engineering Research at the University of Bern. We focus on the development of advanced in-vitro models by combining engineering, microfluidics, microtechnologies, material sciences and cell biology (see references (1-3)). You have a solid background in theoretical and experimental microfluidics, engineering, and ideally, convincing cell culture experience. If you are passionate about developing innovative in vitro models to replace animal testing, enjoy pioneering unique microfabrication techniques, and have an interest in laboratory automation, we’d love to hear from you.

6. Fully Funded PhD in Exoplanet Atmospheres
Summary of Funded PhD Program
The group of Daniel Kitzmann focuses on the development of new radiative transfer and chemistry models to interpret observations of exoplanet atmospheres, including high-resolution ground-based spectroscopy and JWST. The group of Jens Hoeijmakers focuses on carrying out observations of exoplanet atmospheres, especially high-resolution ground-based spectroscopy of ultra-hot Jupiters. The two groups work together to enable faster, more efficient and more robust interpretations of new and upcoming observations of the atmospheres of hot gas giants as well as smaller, cooler exoplanets.
Application Deadline: December 20, 2024
7. Fully Funded PhD in Computer Vision
Summary of Funded PhD Program
We have an opening for a PhD position in computer vision. The main research topic of this position is 3D object reconstruction and animation from real videos. This project is based on unsupervised learning, that is, it uses datasets that do not have human labeling/annotation (eg, text, bounding boxes, pose, skeletons) and does not rely on prior models built through supervision (eg, segmentation methods, depth map predictors, object classifiers). One of the main challenges is to handle the deformation of objects since the object categories are unknown.
