2. Fully Funded PhD in Environmental Science focusing on Mercury in Permafrost Soils
Summary of Funded PhD Program
Climate-driven release of Hg upon permafrost thaw has already been demonstrated. A robust understanding of the underlying soil Hg remobilization processes is, however, still missing. This program aims to unravel the climate vulnerability of Arctic Hg stocks by investigating the reduction and desorption processes of Hg along permafrost thaw gradients. We will do this by applying both field- and laboratory-based approaches. The field study will be conducted in Tavvavuoma (one of the most extensive permafrost peatland areas in Fennoscandia) along permafrost thaw transects where we already have demonstrated decreasing concentrations of Hg in the soil matrix upon permafrost thaw and peat inundation. In the laboratory, we will then apply novel experimental approaches where reduction and desorption processes and potential are uncovered. Together, these approaches will allow us to generate a deeper understanding of permafrost soil Hg remobilization processes and link these to land destabilization processes, carbon remineralization, and other key biogeochemical processes.

3. Fully Funded PhD in Environmental Science, Key-processes of Sea-spray Emissions and their Response to Climate Changes
Summary of Funded PhD Program
Besides gases, the atmosphere consists also of aerosol particles, from nanometer size to <100 micrometer, with a complex chemical composition. Aerosols influence the climate due to their own scattering of sun-light, and due to their influence on the reflectivity of clouds. Sea spray is the largest natural aerosol source, producing an aerosol composed of sea salt and organic compounds. The source magnitude and the chemical composition depends on several factors that are changing due to the ongoing climate changes. These include, but are not limited to, wind speed, surface water temperature, sea ice, salinity, marine microbiology, ocean chemistry and ocean waves. The project coordinator has been among the forerunners in this field, and one of the key researchers on the topic over the last few decades.

4. Fully Funded PhD in Environmental Science, Greenland glacier melt effect on fjords biogeochemistry
Summary of Funded PhD Program
Glaciers in the high Arctic form an impermeable cap that traps a large reservoir of subsurface methane (both biogenic and thermogenic). Greenland has been at the forefront of glacial retreat in the recent decades, at thus far unseen rates. The amount of methane that is liberated in association with glacier retreat is essentially unknown. East Greenland glaciers are, in particular, understudied in this regard due to limited accessibility of this remote region, but recent work offshore East Greenland highlighted methane emission hotspots in the water column, close to the fjords where ocean-terminating glaciers are present. In parallel, glaciers might also release large amounts of organic matter in the form of dissolved and particulate organic carbon. While meltwater could provide a source of labile carbon to bacterial communities in glacier fjords, bacterial communities might rely primarily on autochthonous carbon sources.

5. Fully Funded PhD in Theoretical Physics – Thermodynamic bounds for non-equilibrium systems
Summary of Funded PhD Program
Equilibrium statistical physics provides an extremely powerful and universal formalism for describing the behaviour of many-particle systems in thermal equilibrium. However most systems of interest to us and that we see around us are out of equilibrium. For such systems, there is no general theory available. An exception to this is the field of stochastic thermodynamics which provides, under certain restrictions and assumptions, a general theory for small out-of-equilibrium systems. Interesting insights which have emerged from this field are the fluctuation theorems, the Jarzynski equality and the thermodynamic uncertainty relations.

6. Fully Funded PhD in Physics for Studies of Quantum Materials
Summary of Funded PhD Program
The quantum materials characterization group within the division for condensed matter and quantum optics at Stockholm University invites applications for a PhD student position towards studies of quantum materials. The PhD project is focused on thermodynamic studies of strongly correlated materials including heavy fermion compounds, magnetic materials, and unconventional superconductors, at high magnetic fields and low temperatures.
Within this research project, the PhD student will study specific heat and other electronic and magnetic properties at low temperatures. The candidate should have a strong interest in condensed matter / materials physics, experimental measurement techniques, and low-temperature physics. The project activities will be carried out at AlbaNova with occasional visits to international high magnetic field facilities (Florida, Grenoble). The work will be performed in close collaboration with research groups locally, nationally, as well as and internationally.

7. Fully Funded PhD in Physics – Axion searches with metamaterials
Summary of Funded PhD Program
We are seeking a highly motivated PhD student to join our research group focused on the search for dark matter axions, specifically in the higher frequency ranges using the concept of a plasma haloscope. Axions, a well-motivated dark matter candidate, arise independently from the strong CP problem in QCD. The most sensitive method to detect axions in the microwave regime is through a cavity haloscope. This method exploits the effect that, under a strong magnetic field, axions can resonantly convert into photons when their mass matches the cavity frequency. Recent theoretical advances suggest that dark matter axions may exist at higher masses, corresponding to frequencies above 10 GHz. However, higher frequencies necessitate smaller cavities, which typically reduce sensitivity due to decreased interaction volume.
