2. Fully Funded PhD in learning and optimization for edge computing
Summary of Funded PhD Program
The Division of Network and Systems Engineering is looking for two doctoral students with a very strong background and interest in system modeling, optimization, and machine learning. The successful candidate will join a MSCA Doctoral Network project on developing rigorous, novel tools for safe and prompt learning and optimization of distributed network infrastructures. A strong focus will lie on the development of algorithms that include machine learning components, and on cooperation with industrial partners and with the TECoSA competence center at KTH.

We are looking for a PhD student in material characterization and its connection to physical modeling at the Hultgren Lab unit of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering. This doctoral position is aimed at enabling sustainable industrial transformations by establishing high-throughput material characterization research at large-scale synchrotron and neutron facilities, e.g. PETRA III in Hamburg and ILL in Grenoble, and also in lab-scale. This will involve the development of new methods and test environments to be able to simulate industrial manufacturing processes and to be able to study the microstructure development of materials effectively.

Long-term operation and unfavorable conditions may lead to degradation of the aerodynamic performance of aero-engines over time, which can increase fuel consumption alongside the emissions associated to it. Repair of aero-engine components is also very important concerning sustainability, as performance lost to degradation and damages could be recovered, avoiding costly replacements of the engine components. Improved diagnostics using sensors and advanced algorithms could thus improve material utilization and availability, thereby positively impacting in the sustainability of the aviation sector.

We are looking for two PhD students to work with advanced nuclear materials. The two PhD projects are aimed at a) modeling the behavior and properties of new coatings for light water reactor cladding tubes using atomistic simulations; and b) to study the radiation damage physics of advanced steels using experiments and modelling, and in particular to develop an experimental environment to irradiate new materials at low temperatures and observe their behaviour.
