Do you have a Master’s degree and are looking for fully funded PhD opportunities? University of Lausanne, Switzerland is now accepting applications for several funded PhD programs across a range of research areas.
1. Fully Funded PhD in MAPK-induced transcription
Summary of Funded PhD Program
The aim of the project is to study the dynamics of transcription stimulated by MAPK pathways in the model organism Saccharomyces cerevisiae. In all eukaryotic cells, MAPK cascades relay extracellular information into a defined biological response, which encompasses the induction of a specific transcriptional program. We have established several live-cell microscopy assays to monitor the dynamics of transcription upon activation of a MAPK pathway in budding yeast. The objective of this project is to apply these tools to understand the role of the promoter sequences in defining the characteristics of the transcription dynamics. In addition, optogenetics will be used to control the localization of the MAPK in the nucleus and single molecule imaging techniques will be implemented to get deeper insights into the binding of transcription factors on DNA.

2. Fully Funded PhD in gut microbiota ecology and evolution
Summary of Funded PhD Program
We are looking for an outstanding and highly motivated candidate to join our research group to work on the gut microbiota of social bees. The thesis project will take place in the framework of the SNSF Consolidator grant project called ‘GLOBEE’ (https://engelbeelab.com/project/globee). In this project, we use computational and experimental approaches to study the ecology and evolution of the specialized gut microbiota across different social bee species. The project could include field work in Brazil and/or Malaysia (5%), high-throughput sequencing and bioinformatics analysis of metagenomics datasets (i.e. coding and using computing cluster, 70%), wet lab experiments if desired (5-20%) and writing and reading scientific literature (20%).This project will advance our general understanding of the evolution and ecology of gut microbiota across animals and elucidate the functional potential of the microbiota of key pollinators across a wide range of ecosystems.
Application Deadline: 31.12.2024
3. Fully Funded PhD in French studies and musicology
Summary of Funded PhD Program
The doctoral student will be in charge of research on lyrical texts from polyphonic sources of the 15th century. The corpus will contain secular songs by Guillaume Dufay and other composers, songs preserved in several collections such as the Oxford songbook, Bodléienne Canonici Misc. 213. The work will include an editorial component (paper edition and digital format): the expected results will be the establishment of the texts, their XML transcription and their edition. In addition, the doctoral student will take part in the team’s activities: participation in scientific workshops and international meetings; support for the project’s influence in scientific networks in Switzerland and elsewhere.

4. Fully Funded PhD in Information Systems
Summary of Funded PhD Program
Human and social factors play a key role in privacy. For instance, individuals’ privacy is affected by the actions of their contacts. Also, individuals are influenced by their own past experience and by their contacts when making privacy-related decisions. This is particularly true and important for emerging technologies and services, such as those related to the quantified self, online social networks, and the Internet of Things. The goal of this research is to study the human and social aspects of privacy with a special focus on emerging technologies and services. To do so, the successful candidates may have to interact/collaborate with researchers from the medicine and/or law, while focusing on the core computer-science/information-system aspects of privacy. At least 50% of your time will be dedicated to conducting scientific research for the doctoral thesis.
Application Deadline: December 1st, 2024
5. 02 Fully Funded PhD
Summary of Funded PhD Program
State capacity, measured as the ability of a state efficiently provide public services to its citizens, is arguably essential to produce and attract human capital and, hence, to generate economic growth. Since their establishment in the mid-19th century, postal services have likely represented one of the earliest forms of major public infrastructure in Western societies, providing a variety of services promoting the spread of ideas and social capital in addition to the expansion of the financial sector via a reduction in communication costs.

6. Fully Funded PhD in law
Summary of Funded PhD Program
The Centre for Comparative, European and International Law of the Faculty of Law, Criminal Sciences and Public Administration is inviting applications for two Graduate Assistant / PhD positions in Sports Law.
Application Deadline: December 20, 2024
7. Fully Funded PhD in Glacier Geophysics
Summary of Funded PhD Program
The Institute of Earth Sciences at the University of Lausanne is seeking to fill two PhD positions in a project recently funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation. The project, entitled “Drone Radar for Alpine Glacier ObservatioN (DRAGON)” builds on our recent achievements in high-resolution, high-density, 3D and 4D surveying of alpine glaciers using a newly developed drone-based ground-penetrating radar (GPR) system.
PhD 1 will focus on characterizing and monitoring steep, inaccessible glaciers to improve understanding of the physical processes driving ice avalanches. This role involves developing innovative 3D and 4D GPR acquisition and processing strategies to obtain detailed data on glacier bedrock topography, internal ice movement, crevasse networks, ice thermal regimes, and water distribution.
PhD 2 will focus on using 4D GPR to map and monitor the englacial and subglacial hydrological networks in alpine glaciers, capturing seasonal and interannual changes in drainage systems. This role involves the development of advanced data processing and interpretation techniques, along with integration of photogrammetry, dye tracing, and other measurements, to enhance understanding of glacier hydrology and its influence on glacier dynamics under changing climate conditions.

8. Fully Funded PhD in Regulating the Algorithmic State with Regulatory Sandb
Summary of Funded PhD Program
Are you interested in the topic of regulating AI and the algorithmic state? Are you enthusiastic about developing research at the crossroads between Public Administration and Public Law. Join our research team in the project “Regulating the Algorithmic State with Regulatory Sandboxes”. The project will explore issues of experimental regulation and administrative authorities in the context of the deployment and uses of AI systems in public administration. In this context, it will map the practices of public authorities and explore legal and organizational issues regarding such implementation tools.

9. Fully Funded PhD in microbial geochemistry of methane and nitrous oxide emissions
Summary of Funded PhD Program
The aim of the project is to study overlooked processes in methane and nitrous oxide cycling in various ecosystems in Switzerland, ranging from eutrophic lakes to alpine lichens. The candidate will take an interdisciplinary approach combing field work with laboratory experiments, borrowing techniques from chemistry, geology, biology, and molecular biology. Example approaches used may include monitoring gas production in situ using portable flux chambers, laboratory incubation experiments, DNA and RNA sequencing and analysis, gas chromatography and stable isotope analyses, wet chemistry, and microscopy.
