Do you have a Master’s degree and are looking for fully funded PhD opportunities? Utrecht University, Netherlands is now accepting applications for several funded PhD programs across a range of research areas.
1. Fully Funded PhD in Agent-based modelling for reconstructing the history of culture & language
Summary of Funded PhD Program
The aim of this project is to understand and quantify the roles of sociocultural and biophysical factors in the evolution of linguistic diversity using an agent-based modelling approach. The spatial agent-based model should simulate how and where languages (agents) change, merge, and split over time. You will use linguistics theory in combination with large datasets of environmental, demographic, sociocultural and linguistic variables to define the model rules.

2. Fully Funded PhD in Optimisation of Technologies for Electrifying Chemical Processes
Summary of Funded PhD Program
This PhD position is part of a large research project ‘Sunsolr: Electrification of chemical conversions’ which is funded by the Long Term Program Process Technology (LTP) set up with Industry, the Dutch funding body TKI E&I, and academia. The LTP programme is coordinated by the Institute for Sustainable Process Technology (ISPT) and aims at contributing to the development of the process industry of the future. Accordingly, you will be embedded in an interdisciplinary team with four additional PhD candidates from partner universities (TU/e, TU Delft, University of Groningen, and Twente University) and with strong interaction and support from leading energy and chemical companies.
Application Deadline: 20 October 2024
3. Fully Funded PhD in Human Dimensions of Human-Wildlife Interactions
Summary of Funded PhD Program
As a PhD candidate on the human dimensions of human-wildlife interactions, you will focus on studying the individual relationships between people and wildlife in two living labs, Grenspark KempenBroek and Nationaal Park Zuid-Kennemerland. Using citizen science you will investigate what interactions people have with wildlife, how they are experienced, and where in the landscape different types of interactions occur. Based on these results, you will assess the role citizen science can play to monitor and ultimately influence human-wildlife interactions and perceptions.
Application Deadline: 31 October 2024

4. Fully Funded PhD in Governance of Human-Wildlife Interactions
Summary of Funded PhD Program
We investigate the interactions between humans and animals, and explore how the behaviour of wildlife and humans can be influenced in such a way that a low-conflict coexistence of humans and wildlife becomes possible. The research is approached through diverse scientific disciplines in close cooperation with various societal partners, such as nature managers, farmers, hunters, animal welfare organisations and government agencies. We are currently looking for a team of six PhD candidates with backgrounds in ecology, social science and philosophy.
Application Deadline: 31 October 2024
5. Fully Funded PhD in Ecology of Human-Wild Ungulate Interactions
Summary of Funded PhD Program
As a PhD candidate in Ecology of Human – Wild Ungulate interactions, you, as part of the WildlifeNL team, will focus on studying the behavioural interactions between wild ungulates and inhabitants in two living labs, Grenspark KempenBroek and Nationaal Park Zuid-Kennemerland. You will use technological tools to firstly better understand how and why people and wild ungulates react to each other in the ways they do and in certain cases come to conflict.

6. Fully Funded PhD in Ecology of Human-Large Grazers Interactions
Summary of Funded PhD Program
Numbers of several wild mammal species are increasing in the Dutch landscape, while free-roaming cattle and horses (hereafter, large grazers) are also increasingly used in nature management. For a densely populated country like the Netherlands, this means that there are constant interactions between people and wild mammals or large grazers. While these are often experienced as positive, they also sometimes lead to conflicts: between people and animals, or between people. With a broad consortium of researchers and societal partners, WildlifeNL studies ways to support coexistence between humans and wildlife.
Application Deadline: 31 October 2024
7. Fully Funded PhD in Visual Analytics for Explainable Visual Rehabilitation
Summary of Funded PhD Program
As PhD candidate in this project, you will conduct independent, high-quality research resulting in a doctoral dissertation. Your research will focus on designing a Visual Analytics solution to analyse data from rehabilitating patients with hemianopsia (partial blindness). With the support of explainable AI models, you will develop Visual Analytics dashboards for exploring complex data recorded from the training patients including eye tracking, task progress, and success rates.

8. Fully Funded PhD in Impact of Digital Technologies on Public Education (in The Netherlands)
Summary of Funded PhD Program
Over the past two decades, Big Tech companies have steadily increased their influence over public education. This influence has become particularly evident with the rise of platforms and artificial intelligence (AI). Big Tech conglomerates are restructuring the education sector by incorporating new generative AI (GenAI) infrastructures and applications into their own educational services, while simultaneously integrating them with third-party edtech vendors.
