3. Fully Funded PhD in Chemistry for Conservation and Art

Summary of Funded PhD Program

Oil paintings slowly change as a consequence of internal chemical processes and interactions with their environment. Sometimes, these changes have undesirable effects, like mechanical damage or an altered appearance. The goal of preventive conservation is to minimize the undesirable material changes in cultural heritage objects like paintings, for instance by carefully controlling the temperature, humidity and pollutants in the environment. In this project you will work on a new approach to evaluate the effects of indoor climate conditions, by using highly responsive physical models of the materials in a painting as a type of dosimeter.

4. Fully Funded PhD in Accountable Usage Control for Distributed Data Processing Systems

Summary of Funded PhD Program

To realize the aforementioned goals, you will study existing access and usage control models such as XACML and UCON. These models will need to be critically assessed based on elicited requirements, resulting in proposals for novel usage control models and novel data exchange systems. You will contribute to the development of control mechanisms, monitoring approaches, distributed data processing protocols and policy information protocols. You will interact with experts within the CCI group and the AMdEX consortium to elicit legal, privacy and security requirements on the proposed systems.

6. Fully Funded PhD in Coastal Squeezing Dynamics and Solutions

Summary of Funded PhD Program

This PhD project aims to advance fundamental understanding of the complex dynamics and the interdependencies of the physical, ecological, and political components involved in “coastal squeezing” (i.e., when natural and anthropogenic pressures, from both seaward and landward directions, restrict coastal areas). Coastal squeezing, both within the Netherlands and around the world, threatens the resilience and increases the vulnerability of coastal communities and coastal ecology. Addressing these impacts on coastal systems requires a multidisciplinary approach.

7. Fully Funded PhD in Mechanistic Interpretability

Summary of Funded PhD Program

As machine learning (ML) models continue to have influence on everyday life, it becomes increasingly important to understand how they work internally. Mechanistic interpretability is an emerging subfield of ML where the task is to reverse engineer how modern deep learning architectures make predictions. In this PhD position, you will focus on developing and evaluating post-hoc interpretability techniques, meaning that we are trying to understand predictions from ML models that have already been trained.

10. Fully Funded PhD in Mixotrophic Microalgae in Antarctic Carbon and Sulfur Cycles

Summary of Funded PhD Program

The Antarctic seasonal sea-ice zone is rapidly changing, with consequences for the key primary producers: microalgae growing in sea-ice and water. While traditionally regarded as purely photoautotrophic, many of these microalgae likely also feed on other microbes or take up dissolved organic matter. Such a mixotrophic lifestyle might help them to survive the polar night and allow them an early start in the growing season, long before other algae receive sufficient light to pick up growth.

11. Fully Funded PhD in Intercultural Triadic Shared Decision-Making in Mental Healthcare

Summary of Funded PhD Program

We are looking for an ambitious PhD Candidate for the four-year project “It takes Three to Tango: Triadic Shared Decision-Making with Migrants, Their Support Systems, and Mental Healthcare Providers.”. Shared decision-making (SDM) is particularly important in mental healthcare because considerations around what is suitable/preferable for the migrant client are highly personal in this context. In this context, SDM seems to have various beneficial effects on provided care and client outcomes. However, despite the need for SDM among migrants, SDM is not sufficiently implemented in mental healthcare in general, and often likely even less for certain subpopulations such as migrants.

12. Fully Funded PhD in Computational Electrochemistry (ANION)

Summary of Funded PhD Program

This PhD project focuses on understanding nanoscale electrochemistry, which is vital for next-generation devices in the electrification transition. It investigates how activity at one nanoelectrode site, or “hot spot,” affects nearby sites via local fluctuations, such as in electrochemical potential or concentration. Using advanced simulations like transition path sampling with molecular dynamics and neural network potentials, the study aims to uncover molecular mechanisms behind these fluctuations and their impact on reaction rates. By modeling interactions between two hot spots under confined conditions, it will explore how correlations arise in non-equilibrium systems.

13. Fully Funded PhD in Simulation Tool to Compare Outcomes of Treatments in Psychopathology

Summary of Funded PhD Program

The first part of the project is building the simulation tool. This requires mapping out the most important available interventions and formalising them so that the outcomes of interventions can be simulated. We will be able to evaluate the benefit of the simulation tool in an empirical setting using an e-health program offered to students (Caring Universities). This allows us to evaluate and further develop the computational tool . Finally, the computational tool is further adapted to be applied to more general clinical settings using information from clinical experts. The upgrade is tailored to just-in-time adaptive interventions, where parts of the intervention are adapted such that they correspond to the tracks of the highest success rates provided by the computer simulations.

14. Fully Funded PhD in Concept Drift in Sensor-rich Environments

Summary of Funded PhD Program

Increasingly, sensor-rich smart systems are being created to monitor and control cyber-physical environments. The models are being constructed and tested based on historical sensor data. However, due to environmental changes, over time the quality of environmental representation and the quality of trained computational models decreases. This phenomenon is well-known as concept drift, a change in statistical properties of continuously generated data over time, e.g., sensor streams, which results in degradation of the performance of models that were developed before the change occurred and reduction in the quality of reasoning on new data, since patterns that were mined previously are now obsolete.
