Do you have a Master’s degree and are looking for fully funded PhD opportunities? Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences, Sweden is now accepting applications for several funded PhD programs across a range of research areas.
1. Fully Funded PhD in Multi-Taxon Forest Biodiversity Assessment
Summary of Funded PhD Program
We are seeking a motivated PhD student to join an exciting project aimed at developing cutting-edge tools for assessing and monitoring biodiversity in managed forest landscapes. This position is hosted at the department of Wildlife, Fish, and Environmental Studies at SLU in Umeå and is part of a collaborative research effort focusing on Sweden’s boreal forests. The project provides a unique opportunity to engage with innovative ecological research and contribute to real-world forest management practices.

2. Fully Funded PhD in Environmental communication
Summary of Funded PhD Program
The PhD position is part of a project that adopts multispecies perspectives on agrarian change in South Africa, using maize as a lens for a wider analysis of factors that shape smallholder agriculture trajectories. This might include analyses of how insect-resistance or drought- tolerance properties in crops produce certain outcomes and how these properties are enacted as a result of relations with other human and non-human actors. We will work with South African smallholders to investigate how locally used maize varieties are appreciated and used; how maize is entangled with smallholders’ practices, insects, and agricultural policies as well as wider political economies and ecologies to produce outcomes across time and space. The result will be an improved understanding of the wider set of factors that together impact whether or not smallholders can benefit from new crop technologies.

3. Fully Funded PhD in Sustainable Feed for Poultry and Pigs
Summary of Funded PhD Program
In Swedish poultry and pig production, feed accounts for the majority of both the production costs and the global warming potential. The animals’ feed conversion ratio and the choice of feed ingredients thus have a significant impact on the production’s climate impact. In addition to the climate impact, contributions to biodiversity, circularity, competition between feed and food, and self-sufficiency are important sustainability parameters. Future animal production needs feed that can meet these upcoming challenges without losing profitability and competitiveness. Possible strategies could include a higher proportion of feed ingredients produced from side streams and materials unsuitable for human consumption.

4. Fully Funded PhD in Biology
Summary of Funded PhD Program
The project aims to understand the regulation of the lipid metabolism in the oleaginous yeast Rhodotorula toruloides and to establish this yeast as model for eukaryotic lipid metabolism- with consequences for biotechnology and treatment of diseases connected to disturbed lipid metabolism. The successful candidate will investigate genomes, transcriptomes and proteomes of high- and low lipid producing strains of R. toruloides. Results will be combined to reconstruct pathways of lipid synthesis and its regulation. The function of some of the identified genes and pathways will be tested by gene deletion/ overexpression in accordingly engineered strains.
Application Deadline: 2024-12-15
5. Fully Funded PhD in forage production, feeding and grazing
Summary of Funded PhD Program
Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences, Department of Applied Animal Science and Welfare, and the competence centre SustAinimal work together to explore the role of livestock for future increased, sustainable and competitive food production in Sweden. Focus is solutions delivering food and ecosystem services, which result in possibilities to run competitive enterprises in various parts of the food sector. Increasing demands on climate adaptation of plant cultivation is needed to ensure sustainable animal production.
