2. Fully Funded PhD in Geomechanics
Summary of Funded PhD Program
The objective of this project is to develop a novel methodology through data-driven Machine Learning (ML) approaches for improving successful upscaling of subsurface engineering. A unique dataset from a metre-scale demonstrator of GCS in EPFL will enable fine training of the ML algorithms and the results will be compared to more conventional constitutive modeling approaches. Implementation of physical laws and multi-physics constrains may be considered for evaluating their impact on the accuracy of the results and computational cost. The methodology aims to significantly improve computational time and reliability of multi-scale modeling for the prediction of the macroscopic mechanical behavior of the involved geomaterials in GCS (caprock and reservoir).

3. Fully Funded PhD in Catchment Hydrology and Geomorphology Lab
Summary of Funded PhD Program
Mountain regions are hotspots of land cover and climatic changes where the interactions of climate, parent material, topography, and biota define key ecosystem services tied to the cycling and storage of carbon in soil. Yet, our ability to quantify and predict soil carbon stocks and lateral fluxes across such highly heterogeneous landscapes is still limited. By integrating field monitoring, soil biogeochemical analysis, and numerical modeling of coupled ecohydrological and geomorphological processes, SOCscape will evaluate the dynamics of lateral soil carbon redistribution across environmentally complex and geochemically distinct landscapes.

8. Fully Funded PhD in Environmental Microbial Ecology
Summary of Funded PhD Program
The PhD project will focus on the environmental adaptation strategies of cryospheric microbial communities in response to climate warming and in turn gauge the downstream effects these communities have on GHG emissions and ecosystem functions in alpine permafrost areas. To anticipate the full potential of the microbial organisms to adapt to climate change the project will integrate understanding of both community population level changes and individual molecular scale adaptation strategies that allow organisms to thrive in rapidly changing and threatened permafrost environments.

12. Fully Funded PhD in modeling social and environmental performance of buildings (ETHOS)
Summary of Funded PhD Program
The ETHOS Lab (Engineering and Technology for Human Oriented Sustainability) is seeking PhD students to work on projects related to inference, modeling, and optimization of social and environmental performance of commercial buildings. Hybrid working and other evolving patterns of behavior have added an additional layer of complexity to optimal management of building spaces and the organizations who use them. To address this complexity, we must expand our understanding of human experiences, performance, and well-being in buildings. Our research will therefore involve the development of tools and methods for better characterizing occupant behavioral dynamics in buildings and the social and environmental performance of buildings, leveraging survey-based and data-driven methodologies.
