Do you have a Master’s degree and are looking for fully funded PhD opportunities? University of Twente, Enschede, Netherlands is now accepting applications for several funded PhD programs across a range of research areas.

1. Fully Funded PhD in Dynamic Disease Maps and Digital Twins for novel treatments of OA

Summary of Funded PhD Program

Osteoarthritis (OA) is a complex disease in which multiple tissues in the joint are affected. Recently, multiple OA risk genes were identified based on small genetic variations (SNPs) in the regulatory sequences of these genes. These variations can lead to unfavorable expression of these genes contributing to disease progression. OA patients have different unique combinations of SNPs that lead to OA onset and progression.

3. Fully Funded PhD in Biophysics

Summary of Funded PhD Program

The objective of this project is to identify and characterize such rare events and to study why certain events evade protein quality control or why the protein quality control cannot revert this event. This project will investigate how these protein misfolding and aggregation events are influenced by the biochemical and physicochemical properties, and whether these properties are altered by factors such as disease-related mutations, post-translational modifications or errors in the quality control system.

4. Fully Funded PhD in multimodal information fusion in dynamic environments

Summary of Funded PhD Program

This research project focuses on the effective control and data integration of drone swarms: combining heterogeneous information from different sources in a meaningful way is a complicated task. Each information source may contribute differently to the overall picture, with variations in data types, sampling times, and resolutions. Despite these differences, a consistent and reliable result must be delivered to a human observer. When multiple drones explore an environment, they need to be controlled effectively as a group, and their sensed data must be combined regardless of each drone’s relative position in the swarm. Missing data must be inferred from past observations or by integrating other data sources.

5. Fully Funded PhD in Physics-Informed Neural Networks for Multi-Hazard Modelling

Summary of Funded PhD Program

Natural hazards such as earthquakes, floods, and landslides pose significant risks to human populations, infrastructure, and ecosystems. These hazards rarely occur in isolation; they often trigger or interact with other processes, leading to multi-hazard effects. For instance, an earthquake may trigger landslides, which in turn can block rivers, causing floods. Accurate prediction and simulation of such multi-hazard events is essential for improving disaster preparedness, risk mitigation, and resilience.

14. Fully Funded PhD in data-driven healthcare models for pandemic preparation

Summary of Funded PhD Program

Access to care is a fundamental human right to be maintained even during a health crisis. Pandemics, large outbreaks of infectious diseases such as influenza, or outbreaks of high-consequence infectious diseases such as Ebola result in seriously ill patients straining healthcare delivery from a clinical perspective as well as from the perspective of available hospital resources such as operating rooms, staffed beds at the ward and ICU. During outbreaks, sustaining regular care for non-infected patients is just as essential as care for infected patients. Especially non-urgent care is at risk of being postponed.

15. Fully Funded PhD in Molecular structure of electrode-electrolyte interfaces in electrochemistry

Summary of Funded PhD Program

Electrochemical processes play a major role in the current energy transition. They make batteries, fuel cells, and electrolyzers work. Despite this importance, the properties of electrode-electrolyte interfaces are at present rather poorly understood because they are extremely difficult to characterize at the molecular scale. Electrochemical (EC) AFM bares the promise to combine atomic scale imaging with force spectroscopy to probe the structure of these interfaces and their response to EC reaction conditions (think of changes in the hydration structure, ion adsorption, and surface reconstruction).
