Do you have a Master’s degree and are looking for fully funded PhD opportunities? University of Antwerp, Belgium is now accepting applications for several funded PhD programs across a range of research areas.
1. Fully Funded PhD in morphology of filter feeding in paddlefish
Summary of Funded PhD Program
Bioinspiration (including biomimetics and biomimicry) develops novel materials, devices, and applications inspired by biological structures and strategies. The Nature4Nature project brings biologists, engineers, designers and manufacturers together to deliver early-stage researchers (ESRs) teaching in a learning environment that connects the inspiration, integration and implementation aspects of the bioinspiration process to undertake the conceptual, methodological and practical challenges. To do so, the project will collectively focus on biological filtration mechanisms to explore, test and design high-throughput, clog-resisting filtration systems, which could ultimately alleviate the current problems facing aquatic environments.

2. Fully Funded PhD in enhanced weathering for climate change mitigation
Summary of Funded PhD Program
You will work actively on the preparation of a PhD thesis on carbon sequestration through enhanced silicate weathering. Enhanced silicate weathering is a promising technique for atmospheric CO2 removal. This project aims to experimentally quantify the CO2 sequestration potential through enhanced silicate weathering and to investigate its impact on plant growth. Additionally, the potential of enhanced weathering as a method for undoing soil degradation will be explored.
Application Deadline: 18 November 2024
3. Fully Funded PhD in photo-electrochemical sensors for nucleic acid-based cancer biomarkers
Summary of Funded PhD Program
A-PECS at the University of Antwerp has an open position for a PhD to strengthen our developments in the field of photo-electrochemical sensors for nucleic acid-based cancer biomarkers within the interdisciplinary project SOCan. SOCan “A photo-electrochemical singlet oxygen-based platform for the rapid detection of a panel of cancer biomarkers in tissue and liquid biopsies” is a project involving six research groups [two at UAntwerp, two at UGhent and two at UZA]. This interdisciplinary project houses seven PhD students and five postdoctoral researchers.

4. Fully Funded PhD in bio-electrochemistry
Summary of Funded PhD Program
The overall goal of this PhD is the development of novel aptamer-based electrochemical biosensing strategies that will pave the way to the construction of affordable, robust, and portable detection platforms. Due to the integration of biorecognition elements, such as aptamers, electrochemical biosensors are ideally suited for the selective determination of a wide variety of targets. Crucial in developing such biosensing strategies is the characterization of the aptamers and their interaction with the target molecules via various bioanalytical technologies.
Application Deadline: October 30, 2024
5. Fully Funded PhD in processing and analysis of magnetic resonance images using machine and deep learning
Summary of Funded PhD Program
This position is part of the ERC Consolidator project “A data-driven approach to microstructure imaging” (ADAMI), funded by the European Union. ADAMI is a highly interdisciplinary project that combines insights from physics/engineering (magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and light-sheet microscopy), biological and medical sciences (tissue microstructure, immunostaining, and neuroscience), and computer science (data analysis, image processing, machine learning, and artificial intelligence) to achieve a breakthrough in microstructure imaging with MRI.
