08 PhD Programs – Fully Funded at Empa – Swiss Federal Laboratories for Materials Science and Technology, Switzerland

Do you have a Master’s degree and are looking for fully funded PhD opportunities? Empa – Swiss Federal Laboratories for Materials Science and Technology, Switzerland is now accepting applications for several funded PhD programs across a range of research areas.

1. Fully Funded PhD in Atomic and Molecular Quantum Magnetism

Summary of Funded PhD Program

You will play a key role in conducting systematic research on the quantum coherent manipulation of spins on surfaces. Particular emphasis is placed on molecular spin systems, where you can harness quantum correlations of many-body spin systems, enabled by atomically precise bottom-up synthesis. In our newly established lab, you will use low-temperature, high magnetic field scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and tuning fork atomic force microscopy (QPlus AFM), combined with electron spin resonance techniques.

2. Fully Funded PhD in Computational Biology on the Discovery of Multimodal Biomarkers

Summary of Funded PhD Program

The project will focus on the characterization of molecular determinants that lead to stalled wound healing and chronic wound development. The student will guide analyses of datasets obtained through a comprehensive proteomic and metabolomic characterization of wound exudates. The PhD student will work closely both with clinical partners as well as with Empa groups responsible for the translation of research results. The PhD candidate will implement existing and develop novel approaches for biomarker identification from high throughput molecular measurements.

3. Fully Funded PhD in multi-constituent nanopastes for sinter-bonding

Summary of Funded PhD Program

The Laboratory of Joining Technologies and Corrosion at Empa in Dübendorf drives innovations in joining technologies and corrosion management to enable evolution towards increasingly efficient, reliable and sustainable material technologies. Joining is a key-enabling technology for advanced manufacturing. In order to address increasingly complex demands on joining (dissimilar materials combinations, miniaturisation, extreme operation conditions, thermal management issues, life-cycle considerations and sustainability,…), nano-micro-joining (NMJ) aims at utilising nanoscale, out-of-equilibrium effects for joining purposes, e.g. to achieve joints with higher operation temperature at lower joining temperature.

4. Fully Funded PhD in Application of Raman spectroscopy for Biomarker Detection in Wounds

Summary of Funded PhD Program

The Nanomaterials Spectroscopy and Imaging group at the Transport at Nanoscale Interfaces Laboratory is offering a PhD position focused on demonstrating Raman spectroscopy as a rapid, noninvasive, and label-free omics technology enabling metabolic profiling and biomarker detection in wound exudates. The project will be part of a larger Empa’s initiative, called Wound Booster focused on the design of a self-care integrated system to completely understand, simulate and monitor skin wound evolution, with the ultimate aim to treat and prevent chronic wounds.

5. Fully Funded PhD in Compression-Dominant 3D-Printed Concrete Structural Systems for Buildings

Summary of Funded PhD Program

In this project you will focus on structural form finding of compression-dominated structural systems for buildings. The structural system will be composed of discrete blocks made up of 3D printed concrete. Compression-dominant behavior will be achieved by designing an optimized structural form that directs forces primarily into compression paths, minimizing tensile stresses. This behavior will be further enhanced through mechanically induced compression using iron-based shape memory alloy (Fe-SMA) reinforcement.
