2. Fully Funded PhD in transient operando spectroscopy of supported metal catalysts
Summary of Funded PhD Program
- You will work on the preparation and advanced characterization of supported noble metal catalysts for liquid phase hydrogenation reactions
- You will design and carry out in situ/operando ATR-IR, XAS and XRD/PDF experiments, thus including experiments at synchrotron facilities
- You will use modulated excitation systematically to enhance the output of spectroscopic experiments
- You will contribute to build and use a setup to combine ATR-IR with online analytics
Application Deadline: 13 October 2024
3. Fully Funded PhD in neurodegenerative diseases
Summary of Funded PhD Program
This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge research in the field of neurodegenerative diseases and metal-protein interactions. You will be embedded at the interface of the Luo and Hiller groups, in a highly stimulating collaborative research environment. Both the PSI Villigen and the Biozentrum Basel offer access to fantastic infrastructure including state-of-the-art technology platforms for cuttingedge interdisciplinary research, as well as a lively scientific community and the opportunity to collaborate with experts in the field.

4. Fully Funded PhD in photochemistry
Summary of Funded PhD Program
Multiphase chemistry and photochemistry is an important asset of the evolution of aerosol particles (PM) in the atmosphere. Chemical Aging of secondary organic aerosols (SOA) is affecting their impacts on air quality, human health and climate. Embedded in an interdisciplinary and collaborative project, you will use experiments at PSI’s smog chamber facilities, coupled to state of the start mass spectrometry, and X-ray based spectro-microscopy at the Swiss Light Source (SLS) at PSI, to obtain insight into the role of transition metals in the dark and photochemical aging of secondary organic aerosols from different precursors. The experimental work will be complemented by employing explicit multilayer modelling of particle phase chemistry in collaboration with external partners, to support data analysis and constrain kinetic parameters to allow providing lumped mechanisms to the modelling community.
Application Deadline: 20 October 2024
5. Fully Funded PhD
Summary of Funded PhD Program
Multiphase chemistry and photochemistry are heavily involved in the cycling of important trace gases in the atmosphere. Nitrogen oxides and iodine species are heavily implicated in the ozone budget. Embedded in an interdisciplinary and collaborative project, you will use a set of flow tube experiments in the laboratory, coupled to state of the start trace gas analyzers and mass spectrometry, to obtain insight into the role of transition metals in the photochemical reduction of nitrate and iodate in secondary aerosol proxies, with a special emphasis on the highly concentrated aqueous environments.
