Do you have a Master’s degree and are looking for fully funded PhD opportunities? The Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences, Sweden is now accepting applications for several funded PhD programs across a range of research areas.
1. Fully Funded PhD in Phage-Bacteria interactions and co-evolution in lake ecosystems
Summary of Funded PhD Program
Phage-bacteria interactions and specifically the prevalence of phage co-infection in natural settings is poorly understood and accordingly its impact on phage genome evolution remains unknown. This PhD position is a part of an ERC starting grant (MULTIPHAGE) with the main aim to disentangle the evolutionary dynamics of phages. The holder of this position will contribute to developing a deeper understanding of phage-bacteria interactions in freshwater ecosystems.

2. Fully Funded PhD in microbial ecology
Summary of Funded PhD Program
This position is part of a larger research program aiming to challenge and increase the current undertanding of nitrogen cycling and the mechanisms controlling availability and losses of nitrogen, including emissions of the greenhouse gas nitrous oxide. The PhD student will do research on functional community ecology of nitrogen cycling microorganisms in soil. The work will involve designing and carrying out experiments as well as laboratory work for measuring composition and functioning of the soil microbiome combined with bioinformatical and statistical analyses. Writing scientific publications in collaboration with the supervisors and collaborators and communicating research is an essential part of the work.
Application Deadline: 2024-10-28
3. Fully Funded PhD in The Biocarbon Future
Summary of Funded PhD Program
This project is one of three connected doctoral projects. The doctoral students’ work is integrated through collaboration around different value chains, joint publication of scientific articles, regular project meetings and cross-supervision within the project group. The three PhD students will collaborate – two at Luleå University of Technology (LTU), one in the Department of Energy Engineering and one in the Department of Economics, and one at the at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU) campus in Umeå. This announcement regards the position at SLU with a focus on raw material supply systems.

4. Fully Funded PhD in modelling plant-environment and plant-plant interactions
Summary of Funded PhD Program
Crop production needs to be transformed. Agriculture can be made more sustainable and resilient by relying more on ecosystem services provided by biodiversity and less on external inputs such as fertilizers and pesticides. These ecosystem services depend on crop traits and climate and soil conditions. This doctoral project will employ mathematical models based on ecological and physiological mechanisms to look at advantages and disadvantages of different management practices for primary production, climate change adaptation, and reduced environmental impacts.
