02 PhD Programs – Fully Funded at University of Plymouth, Plymouth, England

Do you have a Master’s degree and are looking for fully funded PhD opportunities? University of Plymouth, Plymouth, England is now accepting applications for several funded PhD programs across a range of research areas.

1. Fully Funded PhD in Identification of lung cancer patients at higher risk for brain metastasis using microfluidics

Summary of Funded PhD Program

Up to 55% of the patients with advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) develop brain metastases with a median survival of 2–3 and 4–6 months in untreated and treated patients, respectively. Due to the location of metastatic lesions, surgical resection is limited, and chemotherapy is quite ineffective due to the blood brain barrier. It is thus crucial to identify patients at higher risk for brain metastasis at an early stage. Brain metastasis has been ascribed to the presence of subsets of circulating tumour cells (CTCs) that transmigrate through the blood brain barrier and thrive in the brain. No definitive signature genes for brain metastasis have been identified in CTCs from NSCLC due to the lack of validated markers or strategies to isolate these cells.

2. Fully Funded PhD in Taking snaps of plant life conditions: designing a new Crop Autonomous Micro-Environmental Recording Array

Summary of Funded PhD Program

In this project, you will develop a new automated sensor system to monitor environmental conditions for each individual pot within a large-scale experiment (50-100 pots). Your aim will be to design, build and test a cost-effective, robust, reliable and fit for purpose system to measure relevant aspects of the plant environment (solar irradiance, air temperature, humidity, wind speed and soil temperature) at a high temporal and spatial density. You will select/build appropriate atmospheric and soil sensors and integrate them into a wireless network continuously recording environmental conditions for each pot.
