Job Description

University of Chicago offers a joint JD/PhD program in Business and Law, administered collaboratively by the University of Chicago Law School and the Booth School of Business. This interdisciplinary program is designed for students aiming for academic careers at the intersection of law and business.

 Program Overview

  • Degrees Awarded: Juris Doctor (JD) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)

  • PhD Fields: Options include Accounting, Finance, Economics, and other disciplines within the Stevens Doctoral Program at Booth

  • Program Structure: Students must apply and gain admission to both the Law School and Booth’s PhD program separately. The program offers flexibility, allowing students to tailor their studies to their research interests.

Funding and Financial Aid

Law School Scholarships: The Law School provides a scholarship program specifically for JD/PhD students. These scholarships range from partial tuition awards to full-ride scholarships with stipends. However, these scholarships are competitive and limited in number. Decisions regarding funding are made by the JD/PhD Committee after admission and are communicated in the financial aid award notification.

Booth PhD Funding: PhD students at Booth receive full tuition coverage and an annual stipend of $50,000 for five years, contingent upon satisfactory academic progress. Additional benefits include health insurance coverage, a $2,000 computer stipend, and up to $3,000 per year for research and conference travel.

Admissions Process

  • Separate Applications: Applicants must apply to both the Law School and Booth’s PhD program independently. Admission to one program does not guarantee admission to the other.

  • Application Materials: Each program has its own set of requirements, typically including academic transcripts, letters of recommendation, a statement of purpose, and standardized test scores (e.g., LSAT for Law School, GRE/GMAT for Booth).
