The Pauli Murray Fellowship, initiated by the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), is an 18-month, full-time paid leadership development program aimed at cultivating the next generation of civil rights advocates and nonprofit leaders. Named in honor of Reverend Dr. Pauli Murray—a pioneering legal scholar and activist—the fellowship provides recent college graduates from underrepresented communities with immersive work experience, mentorship, and leadership training within the ACLU’s national office.
Role Description:
Pauli Murray Fellows participate in dynamic assignments across core departments at the ACLU, including:
- Project Management and Strategic Support: Work with senior staff to support advocacy campaigns, communications strategy, and program coordination.
Mentored Experience: Receive one-on-one mentoring from ACLU staff and leaders in civil rights and liberties advocacy.
Cross-Team Collaboration: Engage in interdisciplinary projects that support organizational goals related to racial justice, voting rights, immigration, and more.
Leadership Development: Participate in structured leadership training and networking opportunities with nonprofit professionals and ACLU alumni.
Capstone Initiative: Design and execute a project or campaign that reflects the fellow’s interest and aligns with ACLU’s mission. - Application Cycle:

What You’ll Need:

Associate or Bachelor’s degree completed by program start date (Fall 2024)

A strong interest in social justice, civil liberties, or nonprofit work

Resilience and experience overcoming systemic barriers

Legal authorization to work in the United States

Willingness to work full-time in New York City
Preferred or Required Qualifications:

Background or lived experience aligned with underserved or marginalized communities

Strong interpersonal and written communication skills

Experience in organizing, advocacy, or civic engagement (preferred, not required)

No prior affiliation with the ACLU is required
