Job Description: The flagship award of USC’s Graduate School, given annually to a small cohort (10–12) of incoming Ph.D. or MFA students from any discipline. It builds a community of scholars and provides enhanced professional development (seminars/workshops) led by the Graduate School.

Role Description: Fellows enroll full-time in their doctoral or MFA programs and participate in special seminars (e.g. GRAD 801) and workshops. They join an interactive network of Presidential Fellows across campus.

Application Cycle: Annual for the incoming class.

What You’ll Need: Nomination by your department or graduate director; admission to a USC doctoral or MFA program; outstanding academic record. Open to all disciplines and nationalities.

Preferred or Required Qualifications: Exceptional intellectual promise and leadership. Selection criteria include unique qualities, accomplishments, creativity, leadership, and commitment to improving others’ lives. Nomination letters must highlight these traits.

Benefits and Perks: Multi-year award: $48,000 total for Ph.D. (over 8 semesters) or $30,000 total for MFA (5 semesters). Recipients also receive standard assistantship (tuition/fees) from their program. Additionally, presidential fellows attend an in-person professional development institute and receive health insurance.
