Job Description
The McKnight Theater Artist Fellowships are twelve-month, unrestricted awards administered by the McKnight Foundation to support mid‑career theater makers based in the Minneapolis–Saint Paul region. Each year, up to eight Fellows receive $25,000 grants to advance their artistic practice, experiment with new work, and enrich the Twin Cities theater community.
Fellows will use award funds to pursue individualized artistic goals, which may include but are not limited to:
- New Work Development: Research, scriptwriting, and workshopping original plays or performance pieces.
- Professional Collaboration: Partner with directors, designers, dramaturgs, or performers to realize ambitious projects or pilot innovative theater formats.
- Community Engagement: Share processes and outcomes through public readings, workshops, master classes, or panel discussions in local venues.
- Documentation & Reflection: Maintain an artistic journal or portfolio documenting creative processes, challenges, and insights for both personal growth and field knowledge.
Location:
Award recipients must be residents of the seven‑county Twin Cities metro area (Anoka, Carver, Dakota, Hennepin, Ramsey, Scott, or Washington County). Fellows work independently or in partnership with local theaters, studios, and cultural organizations.

What You’ll Need:
- Artistic Track Record: A minimum of five years of professional theater‐making experience (playwrighting, directing, performance, design, or dramaturgy).
- Residency Requirement: Current and continuous residency in the seven‑county Twin Cities area for the fellowship year.
- Project Proposal: A compelling statement of artistic intent (1,000 words) detailing goals, methods, and potential community impact.
- Supporting Materials: Résumé or CV, work samples (scripts, performance documentation, design portfolios), and two letters of support from theater professionals familiar with your work.
