The James B. Steele Fellowship, administered by the Reynolds Center for Business Journalism at Arizona State University’s Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication, is a one-year, full-time program designed to cultivate the next generation of investigative business journalists. Named after Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist James B. Steele, the fellowship offers early-career journalists the opportunity to develop sophisticated investigative skills and business acumen through academic coursework, hands-on reporting, and professional internships.
Fellows engage in a comprehensive program that includes:

  • Graduate Studies: Enrollment in a master’s degree program at the Cronkite School, choosing between the Master of Arts in Investigative Journalism (MAIJ) or the Master of Mass Communication (MMC).

  • Investigative Projects: Collaboration with expert editors at the Reynolds Center on in-depth investigative business journalism projects.

  • Professional Internship: Placement in a funded summer internship at a major U.S. or international media organization, focusing on business journalism.

Application Cycle:
Annually.

What You’ll Need:

  • A bachelor’s degree in any discipline from a regionally accredited institution, completed prior to the Fall 2025 semester.

  • Admission to either the MAIJ or MMC program at the Cronkite School for Fall 2025.

  • Commitment to working 20 hours per week with the Reynolds Center during the academic year.

Preferred or Required Qualifications:

  • Strong interest in investigative and business journalism.

  • Demonstrated writing and reporting skills through published work samples.

  • Ability to work collaboratively in a professional newsroom environment.
