Job Description

  • Job Description: A fellowship program to recruit a diverse cohort of incoming master’s and Ph.D. students to UMN. It supports students who bring varied perspectives (geography, background, thought, etc.) to research and scholarship.
  • Role Description: Fellows are incoming graduate students in research-based programs (master’s or Ph.D.). They continue normal study and research, aided by the fellowship’s financial support and professional development opportunities.
  • Application Cycle: Annual (for next fall enrollment).
  • What You’ll Need: Apply through UMN’s Graduate School. Must be U.S. citizen or permanent resident (as well as other eligible statuses like DACA/MN Dream Act/Indigenous Canadian). Must be admitted or applying as a new student in a participating research-based master’s or Ph.D. program.
  • Preferred or Required Qualifications: Academic excellence and contributions to diversity. The fellowship seeks academically strong students whose life experiences, perspectives, or identities diversify their fields.
  • Benefits and Perks: $25,000 stipend for the academic year, tuition at the graduate resident rate for up to 14 credits/semester, and subsidized health insurance for one year. Fellows also participate in a Summer Institute through the Graduate School Diversity Office.
