Job Description

Job Description: A U.S. Department of State program that funds and trains outstanding young people for diplomatic careers. It supports two years of master’s study in fields related to international affairs, along with professional development and mentorship. Fellows serve in foreign policy roles, helping formulate and represent U.S. foreign policy as Foreign Service Officers after graduation.

Role Description: Rangel Fellows receive financial support for graduate school, internships, and training to prepare for the Foreign Service. They participate in a congressional summer internship and an overseas State Department internship while receiving mentoring from senior diplomats. After completing the fellowship and meeting Foreign Service entry requirements, Fellows are appointed as Foreign Service Officers, embarking on diplomatic careers.

Application Cycle: Annually (applications open in summer and close in early fall each year)

What You’ll Need:

    • U.S. citizenship (required)
    • Seeking admission to a two-year, full-time master’s program in a relevant field (e.g. public policy, international affairs)
    • Minimum 3.2 GPA on a 4.0 scale (required)
    • Demonstrated leadership, community service, and a commitment to public service

Preferred or Required Qualifications:

    • Required: Bachelor’s degree by program start; academic excellence and financial need
    • Preferred: Experience or interest in international affairs; involvement with underrepresented communities (the program encourages minority, women, and financially needy applicants)
    • Ability to obtain medical, security, and suitability clearances for State Department employment

Benefits and Perks:

    • Up to $42,000 annually for two years of graduate school (covers tuition, fees, living stipend). Two summer internships with stipends—one on Capitol Hill and one at a U.S. embassy abroad—with related travel expenses covered. Mentoring by Foreign Service Officers and professional development workshops
    • Appointment as a Foreign Service Officer (diplomat) upon successful completion (with a minimum five-year service commitment)
