Job Description

Job Description: A Department of Defense STEM scholarship program combining education and workforce development for U.S. and allied students. It fully funds the education of STEM majors (undergraduate, master’s, doctoral) in 23 fields and guarantees a DoD job after graduation.

Role Description: SMART Scholars pursue a STEM degree at any accredited U.S. university, receive summer internships at DoD laboratories, and commit to working for the DoD (military or civilian) for a period equal to the scholarship length. Students gain hands-on research experience supporting defense missions

Application Cycle: One cycle per year (fall–winter).

What You’ll Need: U.S. citizenship or qualifying allied nationality (U.S., Australia, Canada, New Zealand); major in an approved STEM field; typically a minimum GPA (often ~3.0+); enrollment in or accepted to a qualifying degree program.

Preferred Qualifications: Outstanding STEM coursework, internships or research experience, and interest in DoD careers.

Benefits and Perks: Full tuition and fees paid; annual stipends (e.g. $30K–$38K for grad students); annual book allowance and health insurance; a 10-week paid summer internship at a DoD lab; mentors and career support; guaranteed employment with the DoD after graduation.
