Do you have a Master’s degree and are looking for fully funded PhD opportunities? Swansea University, Wales, United Kingdom is now accepting applications for several funded PhD programs across a range of research areas.
1. Fully Funded PhD in Agriculture and the Environment, Animal Behaviour and In Vivo Studies
Summary of Funded PhD Program
The project builds onresearch in the supervisors’ labs pioneering the use of visual modelling approaches for monitoring and control of horticultural and urban pests, applying and extending the design process to arable crop pests, and utilising LEDs to increase trap conspicuousness. As the visual systems of the two target species have not yet been characterised, genomic approaches, scanning electron microscopy, electroretinography and behavioural tests will establish spectral sensitivity and spatial acuity of CSFB and Mb. The student will then use the insights on the visual biology of the pest and its natural enemy to develop prototype selective traps and test these in lab and field experiments.

2. Fully Funded PhD in Animal Behaviour and In Vivo Studies, Agriculture and the Environment
Summary of Funded PhD Program
Animals have diverse acoustic communication systems, from the chirping of crickets to the almost infinite complexity of human language, and these systems play a vital role in enabling cooperation and structuring societies. Most attempts to understand the causes of this variation use between-species comparisons. These have examined, for instance, whether social or ecological variables predict characteristics of communication systems, such as whether vocalisations are individually distinctive, or the number of different vocalisations used.

3. Fully Funded PhD in Agriculture and the Environment
Summary of Funded PhD Program
Living organisms are continuously exposed to environmental stressors that affect their health, survival and ability to reproduce. In some highly stressful environments however, such as heavily polluted ecosystems that would be expected to cause high mortality rates, populations are thriving. This phenomenon has been attributed for the most part to genetic adaptation, but in many cases the extend of genetic adaptation observed isinsufficient to explain the level of stressor resistance seen. Epigenetic changes contributing to phenotypic plasticity and microbiome-extension of host adaptive phenotypic plasticity are two likely important, andinteracting, contributing mechanisms, but remain poorly characterised.
