Do you have a Master’s degree and are looking for fully funded PhD opportunities? Loughborough University, England is now accepting applications for several funded PhD programs across a range of research areas.
1. Fully Funded PhD in Transporting hydrogen at scale in a cost effective, efficient and safe way
Summary of Funded PhD Program
This project will focus on enhancement of existing and adoption of new materials and processes to suit the needs of a hydrogen pipeline network. This involves a number of areas including understanding the needs and demands of a pipeline network and how it operates in order to balance supply and demand, the limitations of existing materials and processes for pipelines and how they are impacted by hydrogen, the possibilities of new materials and processes to improve existing practices, the technical readiness of new materials and processes, the qualification process and advancement of new applications, demonstration of value increases for safety, sustainability, reliability, availability and cost.

2. Fully Funded PhD in System issues with designing a large hydrogen passenger vehicle
Summary of Funded PhD Program
The goal of this project is to explore how to size, design and operate a pure-electric hydrogen fuel cell propulsion system for large off-road capable passenger vehicles. This includes the fuel cell system, hydrogen storage system, thermal management system, hybrid battery and power electronics, and their optimisation for performance, efficiency, environmental range, robustness and mass. One of the challenges is the thermal management of the fuel cell, which generates low grade heat compared to an internal combustion engine, putting additional load on the cooling system, especially when used in hot climate, off road, uphill, or for towing purposes.

3. Fully Funded PhD in Novel multi-objective optimisation strategies for enhanced efficiencies and agility in hydrogen gas supply
Summary of Funded PhD Program
With the transition to alternative fuels, there is an increase in demand for new sources. Considering hydrogen, current production and supply strategies need to adjust to continue to service the needs of its expanding customer base. This PhD will be conducted in collaboration with BOC, working closely with the Remote Operating Centre who operate and optimise all their H2 plants, bulk distribution and the supply chain.

4. Fully Funded PhD in Low-cost high-performance catalysts for green hydrogen production from wastewater
Summary of Funded PhD Program
This project will explore the feasibility of catalytically cracking and pyrolyzing compounds in these waste streams to produce hydrogen effectively and efficiently and with minimal impurities that could limit its application in downstream processes. The project will involve designing and testing thermal catalytic processes and assessing product distributions to understand their feasibility in an industrial setting. You will gain experience in process chemistry and chemical engineering, material synthesis, and catalytic science. You will also interact and work with a range of industrial partners within the CDT to build experience in addressing real-world challenges and solutions in sustainable hydrogen production.

5. Fully Funded PhD in Low-cost high-performance catalysts for green hydrogen production from water and seawater electrolysis
Summary of Funded PhD Program
The goal of this project is to develop a range of low-cost high-performance catalysts and electrodes for large scale green hydrogen production from water and seawater electrolysis, powered by renewable energy. Particularly we will develop alternative transitional metal-based catalysts for water splitting that includes both hydrogen evolution reaction and oxygen evolution reaction, with high activity and long stability under practical operation conditions.

6. Fully Funded PhD in Investigating weight loss in secondary care settings
Summary of Funded PhD Program
Approximately 30% of people are living with obesity, which is a risk factor for many health conditions that require secondary care and costs the NHS £6.1 billion/year. Making Every Contact Count is an NHS flagship programme that aims to use the millions of interactions health care professionals have with patients to promote behaviour change. Implementing and testing these interventions in secondary care may support patients with weight management and improve their health. This PhD seeks to develop evidence in the area of delivering weight loss interventions in secondary care settings, but the successful candidate will be able to shape the direction of the project with their interests and goals together with their supervisors.
Application Deadline: 31 October 2024
7. Fully Funded PhD in Improvements in purity analysis and the production of suitable reference materials for renewable applications
Summary of Funded PhD Program
This project will be conducted in collaboration with EffecTech Ltd global leaders in gas measurement. Renewable applications such as hydrogen fuel cells and carbon capture technologies are seeing increasingly stringent standards for acceptable impurity levels for hydrogen and carbon dioxide respectively. This in turn drives the requirements for suitable reference materials with traceable compositions for the validation of the instrumentation used to measure these impurity levels.
