2. Fully Funded PhD in Economic and Social Research
Summary of Funded PhD Program
The South West Doctoral Training Partnership (SWDTP) is funded by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) to provide postgraduate research training in the social sciences. UWE Bristol joined the SWDTP in 2016, bringing world-class research expertise to the six pathways as outlined below. Opportunities are available for research study in these pathways based in a number of our Research Centres and Groups. Our research is characterised by our partnerships with external organisations, and provides good opportunities for working collaboratively to undertake research that will make a real impact.
Application Deadline: 14 January 2025
3. Fully Funded PhD in Monitoring river pollution and river health using new technologies
Summary of Funded PhD Program
Rivers are important ecosystems and healthy rivers play a vital role in the movement of water, the cycling of nutrients and for biodiversity resilience. Despite this, many of the worlds rivers are not healthy and are subject to frequent contamination from agriculture and sewage releases. We are looking for an enthusiastic PhD researcher to work in collaboration with an exciting new project funded by the Natural Environment Research Council to develop new sensing technological approaches for monitoring river health.

4. Fully Funded PhD in South West Biosciences
Summary of Funded PhD Program
Acinetobacter baumannii is a common nosocomial pathogen causing pneumonia, bacteraemia, wound and urinary tract infections. Due to improper and frequent antibiotic use A. baumannii has become multi-drug resistant, the World Health Organization has classified it as a priority pathogen of which novel antibiotics are desperately needed. Research into natural antimicrobial compounds is essential in developing novel strategies to treat multidrug resistant infections but high throughput antimicrobial compound screening technologies are currently limited to in vitro or in silico approaches.
Application Deadline: 11 December 2024
5. Fully Funded PhD in Creating a 4D atlas of body composition and gait with 3D cameras and deep learning to inform next generation cattle health and welfare developments
Summary of Funded PhD Program
In this PhD project, the student will harness the massive amount of data our testbed produces over long time periods (>1 year) for each of our 180 cows to develop a deep learning powered 3D atlas over time that learns the main modes of variation in their body composition and gait as the cows mature as well as go through pregnancy and milk production. Particular attention will be paid to both measuring and biomechanically modelling dynamic gait as they walk through the testbed in order to capture both healthy mobility as well as the early signs of disease such as lameness.
