University of Utah Health offers a fully funded PhD program in Biomedical Informatics through its Department of Biomedical Informatics (DBMI). This program is designed to train independent scientists capable of transforming data into knowledge to improve individual and population health.​

Program Overview

The program offers four application tracks:​

  • Translational Bioinformatics

  • Public Health Informatics

  • Clinical Research Informatics

  • Clinical Informatics​

Additionally, students can choose from four methods tracks to tailor their learning:

  • Data Science, AI, Analytics & Computational Methods

  • Ethical Issues in Informatics & Data Science

  • Sociotechnical Design & Evaluation

  • Standards & Interoperability

The curriculum requires approximately 35 credit hours of formal coursework, maintaining a minimum GPA of 3.0, and at least 14 research credit hours leading to the completion and defense of an original PhD dissertation.

Funding Package

All admitted PhD students receive a comprehensive funding package that includes:​

  • Annual Stipend: $40,000

  • Tuition Coverage: 100%

  • Health Insurance: Full coverage

  • Conference Support: Funding to attend research conferences​

The department endeavors to provide funding for all admitted candidates and aligns students’ interests with research project mentors.
