UC San Diego’s PhD in Education focuses on “Transforming Education in a Diverse Society.” The program is designed to prepare scholars for impactful careers in academia, non-profit organizations, and governmental agencies, with an emphasis on improving educational practices and policies to achieve social equity and progress. ​

Funding Package

All admitted PhD students are guaranteed financial support for up to five years, which includes:​

  • Tuition and Fees: Full coverage

  • Health Insurance: Included

  • Annual Stipend: Equivalent to a 50% Teaching Assistant (TA) position; minimum of $20,000 in the first year​

Funding sources may comprise instructional assistantships, Graduate Student Researcher (GSR) positions, university or external fellowships, and stipends. Continued funding is contingent upon maintaining good academic standing and satisfactory progress in the program.​

Curriculum Structure

The PhD curriculum is structured to provide a strong foundation in educational research, with flexibility to tailor coursework to individual research interests.​

Core Components

  • Coursework: Students engage in advanced studies in educational theory, research methodologies, and specialized topics relevant to their research interests.

  • Research: Emphasis on original research leading to a doctoral dissertation that contributes to the field of education.
