Funding Package

All admitted PhD students receive a comprehensive six-year funding package, which includes:​

  • Tuition and Fees: Full coverage of annual registration fees and comprehensive student health insurance.

  • Stipend: Financial support through a combination of Teaching Assistant (TA) or Graduate Student Researcher (GSR) appointments with faculty members, and fellowship quarters in lieu of employment.

  • Non-Resident Tuition: For non-residents of California, the funding includes non-resident tuition for the first year of study for U.S. citizens and permanent residents, and for the first three years for international students, contingent upon satisfactory progress.

Applicants are automatically considered for financial support; no separate application is required.​

Curriculum Overview

  • INTL ST 210A-C: Proseminar in Global Studies I-III​

Electives:

  • Students select two electives offered by the Department of International Studies or an outside department, chosen in consultation with the Graduate Director and/or their advisor.​

Advancement to Candidacy:

  • Students must complete at least 48 units in the first two years. The qualifying examination, typically taken in early to mid-Spring quarter of the third year, consists of two parts: a preliminary examination and a prospectus defense. The prospectus is presented in a colloquium that includes all three members of the dissertation committee.

Language Requirement:

  • Before advancing to candidacy, students must demonstrate a reading knowledge of one language other than English relevant to their program of study.

Admission Requirements

  • Educational Background: A bachelor’s degree from a recognized institution. While a degree in Global Studies is not mandatory, applicants with backgrounds in the social sciences, behavioral sciences, or humanities are encouraged to apply.
