Job Description

This position involves a combination of both clinical and basic research. The candidate should have excellent organizational, communication, and time management skills. Under general direction, assists the research investigator by performing complex research and experimentation by following established protocols. This person will perform routine lab equipment maintenance, set up and operate various scientific apparatus, assist with research projects and may perform independent research or perform various clerical, editorial, supervisory duties, and other duties as assigned. Prior related basic laboratory experience is preferred, but we are willing to train the successful applicant in the specific skills required.

Job Duties

· Assists with clinical and basic science research.

· Processing and storage of clinical samples: blood, cell, muscle, and adipose tissue.

· Operation and maintenance of basic research equipment including balances, pH meters, centrifuges, microscopes, incubators, homogenizers, autoclaves, biological safety cabinet, plate readers, etc.

· Prepares and maintains cell culture, performs molecular biology related experiments (RNA isolation, PCR, RT-PCR), preparation of protein samples, gel electropheresis and western blotting, data analysis and management, and general lab management.

· Equipment and supply sterilization.

· Maintains and keeps research records and logs. Compiles, processes and analyses data, inputs and retrieves data using computers.

· Follow existing research protocols and assisting in developing new research protocols.

· Orders supplies.

· Maintains and organized and clean laboratory in accordance with SLU Health and Safety requirements.

· Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

· Broad knowledge involving laboratory techniques desired.

· Knowledge of laboratory procedures.

· Knowledge of the use and preparation of culture media, chemicals, and reagents.

· Verbal and written communication skills.

· Ability to work as a member of team.

· Ability to follow verbal and written communication instructions.

· Ability to tend to details, maintain records and inventories.

· Ability to operate a personal computer and use and a word processor and spreadsheet.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in biochemistry, biology, molecular biology, chemistry or relevant experience.
