Job Description:
Duties Bioinformatics & HPC
-
- Run or develop bioinformatic pipelines (Linux/bash, Python) on UF’s HiPerGator supercomputer for metagenomic analyses.
- Work with UFIT Research Computing staff to troubleshoot and optimize large-scale data workflows.
- Laboratory Work
- Extract DNA/RNA from environmental samples and prepare libraries for metagenomics.
- Maintain lab protocols and organize sample inventories.
- Field & Logistics
- Assist in coordinating logistics for oceanographic cruises (e.g., R/V Falkor, R/V Atlantis).
- Support sample collection and field research activities.
- Outreach & Accessibility
- Participate in efforts to make science accessible to diverse communities.
- Contribute ideas for lab outreach events and digital content.
Expected Salary: $15/ hour
Minimum Requirements:Newly accepted college student or student in their first year of college interested in learning about research in a lab.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Proactive and detail-oriented, with strong organizational skills.
- Basic Linux/Unix command-line knowledge; scripting (bash/Python) a plus.
- Interest in high-performance computing, large-scale data analysis, molecular biology, and fieldwork.
- Background in biology or computer science (or both).
- Team player with strong problem-solving abilities.
