New York University (NYU) offers a fully funded Ph.D. program in Spanish and Portuguese through its Department of Spanish and Portuguese Languages and Literatures. Funding Package

All new students entering the Ph.D. program in Spanish and Portuguese are fully funded for five years through the Henry M. MacCracken Fellowship program. This fellowship package includes:

  • Tuition and Fees: Full coverage of all tuition, registration, and service fees.

  • Health Insurance: Full cost of NYU student health insurance.

  • Stipend: A generous yearly stipend to cover living expenses. The minimum stipend amount for the 2024–2025 academic year is $35,000.

  • Startup Grant: A one-time $1,000 grant to support research activities.

  • Dean’s Supplement: A number of these awards are enhanced by a Dean’s supplement reserved for historically underrepresented minority groups.

Ph.D. students are not required to teach as part of their MacCracken fellowship packages, but all students are given the opportunity to teach for at least four semesters as a language instructor or recitation leader if they choose to do so. Students who decide to teach will receive extra compensation in addition to their MacCracken stipend. For students who teach four semesters, additional compensation would be at least $18,480.

Admission Requirements

  • Academic Background: A bachelor’s degree or its equivalent from an accredited institution.

  • Application Materials:

    • Online application through NYU’s Graduate School of Arts and Science (GSAS) portal.

    • Official transcripts from all post-secondary institutions attended.

    • Three letters of recommendation.

    • Statement of academic purpose written in English.

    • Writing sample in Spanish or Portuguese.

    • TOEFL or IELTS scores for non-native English speakers, unless they have completed a degree at an institution where the language of instruction is English.
