Job Description
The Irene Yamamoto Arts Writers Fellowship, administered by the Daniel K. Inouye National Center for the Preservation of Democracy at the Japanese American National Museum (JANM), is an annual program that supports emerging arts writers of color. Established to honor Irene Yamamoto, a lifelong arts enthusiast, the fellowship aims to amplify diverse voices in arts criticism, encouraging writers to explore and critique art from their own cultural and political perspectives.
Role Description:
Fellows engage in a six-month program that includes:

Unrestricted Grant: Each fellow receives a $5,000 award to support their writing endeavors.

Publication Opportunity: Fellows have the chance to publish a piece of criticism or review on the Democracy Center’s blog.

Public Presentation: An opportunity to deliver a talk at the Democracy Center at JANM, sharing insights from their work.Focus Area: The fellowship’s focus rotates annually; for 2025, the emphasis is on music criticism.
- Application Cycle: Annually

Be a U.S. citizen or current resident.

Be at least 18 years old.

Identify as a member of a community with ancestry in the original peoples of Africa, Asia, the Americas, Oceania, or the Pacific Islands.

Have less than two years of publication experience, which may include blogs or self-publishing.

Demonstrate a commitment to writing about music.
