The Emerging Public Policy Leadership Award (EPPLA), presented by the American Institute of Biological Sciences (AIBS), recognizes graduate students in the biological sciences who demonstrate an interest and aptitude for working at the intersection of science and public policy. The award aims to engage scientists in the public policy process, promoting informed decision-making that advances the biological sciences for the benefit of science and society.
Role Description:
Award recipients participate in the AIBS Congressional Visits Day, where they meet with lawmakers to advocate for federal investment in the biological sciences. They also receive policy and communications training, including information on the legislative process, trends in federal science funding, and how to engage with policymakers and the news media. Additionally, recipients gain a one-year subscription to the journal BioScience.

What You’ll Need:

U.S. citizenship or U.S. permanent residency

Enrollment in a graduate degree program in the biological sciences, science education, or a closely allied field

Demonstrated interest in and commitment to science policy and/or science education policy

Prior recipients are not eligible for the award.

Preferred or Required Qualifications:

Leadership experience in science policy initiatives

Strong communication skills

Engagement in activities that bridge science and policy.
