Program Overview

  • Degree: Ph.D. in French Language & Literature

  • Institution: Boston University

  • Department: Romance Studies

The program offers professional preparation through the acquisition of extensive knowledge of the field of study; advanced skills in the use, evaluation, and production of critical scholarly and research materials; experience communicating knowledge in a range of contexts; and substantial training in pedagogy and other relevant practical and professional training.

All admitted Ph.D. students in French Language & Literature at BU are guaranteed five full years of financial support, contingent upon maintaining satisfactory academic progress. This support includes:

Funding is typically provided through a combination of Teaching Fellowships, Research Fellowships, and University Fellowships. Students may also apply for additional fellowships to extend their funding beyond five years, such as the BU Center for the Humanities Graduate Dissertation Fellowships and the Graduate Writing Fellowships. Moreover, research and travel funding is available through Graduate Research Abroad Fellowships (GRAF) and Graduate Research in the United States Fellowships (GRUF).

Admission Requirements

  • Academic Background: A bachelor’s or master’s degree in French or a related field. Applicants should demonstrate foundational knowledge of French literature and near-native proficiency in French.

Applicants without an MA can apply directly to the Ph.D. program, as the program includes the option to earn an MA en route to the Ph.D. Students in the terminal MA program are not eligible for most forms of financial support; therefore, those planning to pursue a Ph.D. should apply directly to the doctoral program.
