The Community Action Research Initiative (CARI) Grants, administered by the American Sociological Association (ASA), provide up to $3,000 in direct-cost funding to support collaborative research projects that apply sociological knowledge and methods to address community-identified problems. Established to foster community-engaged scholarship, CARI grants enable sociologists to partner with nonprofit, governmental, or grassroots organizations to co-create actionable solutions.
Role Description:
Grant recipients will:
- Collaborative Project Design: Co-develop a research agenda with a community organization or action initiative, defining goals, methodologies, and expected outcomes.
- Implementation & Data Collection: Conduct data gathering—surveys, interviews, focus groups, participant observation—and analyze findings in collaboration with community partners.
- Capacity Building & Dissemination: Produce tangible deliverables (toolkits, policy briefs, workshops) and share results through community presentations and ASA’s platforms to inform practice and policy.
What You’ll Need:
- Ph.D. in Sociology conferred, or current enrollment in an ASA-recognized Ph.D. program in Sociology.
- Project proposal (500 words each) detailing:
- Research goals and sociological significance.
- Community partnership plan and organizational support.
- Methods, timeline, budget, and expected outcomes.
- One-page letter of support from the collaborating community organization or initiative.
- Curriculum vitae for each principal investigator.
- Evidence of IRB approval, if human subjects research is involved.
- ASA membership is required to receive funding (not required for application).
