Job Description: A 10-week summer fellowship placing STEM graduate students and postdocs in newsrooms. Administered by the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), it aims to train scientists to communicate science through journalism and media.
Role Description: Mass Media Fellows work as reporters or researchers at major media outlets (newspapers, radio, TV, online). They cover science and technology stories, applying their technical background to write articles, conduct interviews, and improve public understanding of science. Fellows enhance their ability to translate complex topics for general audiences.
Location: Various media organizations across the United States (e.g., news outlets in D.C., Boston, San Francisco, etc.). Fellows must be able to attend an orientation at AAAS HQ and a wrap-up session in August.
Application Cycle: Annual, each fall-winter (decision by early spring).
What You’ll Need: U.S. citizenship or authorization to work (e.g., appropriate visa); enrollment as an upper-level undergraduate or graduate student (MS/PhD) in life, physical, health, engineering, computer or behavioral/social sciences; or a recent (within 1 year) graduate or postdoc in those fields.
Preferred Qualifications: Strong writing and communication skills, interest in journalism, and ability to explain science clearly. STEM majors not already studying journalism are ideal.
