1. Fully Funded PhD in real-time post-processing of Flood Forecasts in Alpine Space

Summary of Funded PhD Program

As part of the GLORI-A (Global-to-Regional ICON Alpine Twin) initiative MeteoSwiss is developing a digital twin of the earth weather system with increased resolution over the Alpine region. WSL will support MeteoSwiss in estimating added values of on-demand weather-forecast for anticipation of impactful floods in the Alps. You will work on methods to evaluate in real-time the quality of ongoing impactful weather and hydrological events. You will develop and evaluate storylines to assess the added value of a configurable Digital Twin of the European Alps and hydrological impact models for Switzerland. You interact with stakeholders to identify their needs to increase confidence in decision about mitigation measure during floods. You publish your findings in scientific journals.

2. Fully Funded PhD in airborne snow metamorphism

Summary of Funded PhD Program

The PhD position is part of the project “Impact of newly discovered airborne snow metamorphism (ASM) on optical grain size and isotopic composition of polar snow” which is funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation. You will be responsible for planning and carrying out wind tunnel experiments in the WSL/SLF cold laboratory to systematically study ASM under controlled air flow and atmospheric conditions. You will furthermore provide major contributions to the development and application of a custom field instrument setup for verifying ASM for Antarctica, and to quantify the real-world effect of ASM on the optical grain size and isotopic composition.
