Role Description:
Award recipients participate in the AIBS Congressional Visits Day, where they meet with lawmakers to advocate for federal investment in the biological sciences. They also receive policy and communications training, including information on the legislative process, trends in federal science funding, and how to engage with policymakers and the news media. Additionally, recipients gain a one-year subscription to the journal BioScience.

The research associate will participate in all stages of the project including participant recruitment and retention, quantitative and qualitative data analysis, scholarly article and proposal writing, and planning, implementing, and evaluating educational outreach efforts based on the findings of the research. They will also oversee a detailed transcription process for speech samples and engage in mentoring junior research team members. The position offers a competitive salary and benefits, funds for professional development (e.g., methods workshops), and travel funds.

This position is based in Holdrege, Nebraska, with the geographic accountability region of Phelps, Gosper, Harlan, and Furnace Counties. Primary responsibilities include developing and delivering water and cropping systems extension programming that: a) improves profitability and sustainability, b) reduces environmental risk, c) encourages stewardship, d) enhances resiliency, and e) expands consumer awareness of food, forage, grain, and fiber. The incumbent is an active participant in developing solution-based resources as a member of the statewide Water and Cropping Systems team.

This twelve-month, non-tenure track position carries the title of open rank extension educator or extension instructor, depending on the candidate’s level of education. Those possessing a graduate-level degree in the requested area of instruction will be considered for an open rank educator position, a full-time, promotable, non-tenure track appointment. Those in possession of an undergraduate degree in the requested area of instruction will be considered for an instructor position, a full-time, non-promotable, non-tenure track appointment that will be renewed annually for a maximum of five years in the appointment. If hired as an instructor, the incumbent will be expected to make satisfactory progress toward and complete a master’s degree within the initial five-year appointment period. As part of the Nebraska benefits package, UNL offers tuition remission for full-time employees, up to 15 credit hours per year. Once the master’s degree is earned within that period, the position will advance to an assistant extension educator appointment.

PROGRAMMATIC RESPONSIBILITIES (approximately 80%)

Collaborates closely with colleagues, state and federal agencies, industry representatives, and crop producers to address agronomic and management issues in diverse cropping systems.

Develops, delivers, and measures impacts of programs and engagements regarding rainfed and irrigated crop production systems in Nebraska.

Participates in collection and interpretation of data to develop data driven, digital, and precision agricultural management strategies for clientele.

Uses innovative strategies and cutting-edge teaching and learning methods to design, develop, deliver, and evaluate programs for a robust extension education program focused on water and cropping production systems within the assigned geographic region, and as a member of the statewide Water and Cropping Systems Team.

Engages in a collaborative-learning environment with crop producers and encourages adoption of research-based information in decision-making.

Participates in and supports the Nebraska On-Farm Research Network.

Identifies needs and provides access to educational opportunities within the assigned geographic region, working with unit leaders, extension advisory committees, and local stakeholders (e.g., Natural Resources Districts and local commodity associations).

Works in a multi-disciplinary team environment with extension professionals and other partners to translate and teach the latest research-based information.

Uses entrepreneurial practices to secure grants, contracts, program fees, and partnerships to leverage the extension educational program’s resource base and to extend the reach and impact of these programs.

Partners with research faculty members in action research that can be applied to educational programming.

Conducts needs assessments, identifies priorities, measures program impact, and reports results at professional meetings and in professional publications.

Participates in professional development to enhance and maintain professional expertise in cropping systems and extension pedagogy.

Supports youth development programs by teaching in areas related to Water and Cropping Systems.

ORGANIZATIONAL CITIZENSHIP/LEAD EDUCATOR ROLE (approximately 20%)

This position is based in Ainsworth, NE, with the geographic accountability region of Brown, Rock, and Keya Paha Counties. This is a Livestock Systems extension professional position that will focus on all facets of an integrated livestock system and will develop co-learning engagements for clientele and stakeholders in the beef and/or small ruminant industry.

The agriculture sector is the greatest economic driver in Nebraska. The livestock sector is a major driver of the economy in Nebraska. Of the agriculture sector in Nebraska, beef cattle are the largest economic driver. Communities across Nebraska thrive when there is a robust, profitable economic livestock sector. Nebraska Extension’s role is to catalyze opportunities for the livestock sector to make informed decisions that are supported by research.

Extension is a solution centric organization so core to this role is the ability to engage producers and allied industry and commodity groups in learning and sharing opportunities. Expected outcomes include: 1) engagement strategies based on lasting and trusted relationships with livestock producers, leaders in the livestock industry, livestock allied industries, and commodity groups with ties to the livestock industry, 2) educational opportunities that result in better stewardship of resources and greater profitability that enhances quality of life, and 3) engagement in education that result in solutions that encompass all components of livestock production systems (natural resources, production management, and financial).

This livestock focused extension professional will contribute to the integrated (extension, research, and teaching) land-grant mission of IANR as an effective scholar and citizen. The Veturi Lab (www.veturilab.org) at Penn State seeks a candidate for a Postdoctoral position to work with Dr. Sudha Veturi.

Successful candidates will work with Dr. Veturi to develop and apply new scalable statistical, computational, and machine learning methods for analyzing large-scale multi-modal datasets (e.g., multi-omic, neuroimaging, and electronic health records data) to study the risk of cognitive decline.

The laboratory of Elizabeth McGraw at Penn State is recruiting a highly-motivated Postdoctoral Scholar to work on the interactions between Wolbachia, arboviruses, and mosquitoes. Candidates with skills in molecular biology, virology, and or vector biology will be considered.
