Position Summary

Perform routine and preventative maintenance at the University campus, with a strong focus on plumbing systems, and pools. Address service requests from faculty, staff, and students, and complete assigned work orders from facilities supervisors. Responsibilities include inspections, troubleshooting, repairs, and minor installations to support safe and reliable operations across multiple campus buildings.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

Service Calls & Emergency Response

· Provide responsive, customer-focused service. Prioritize and complete work orders efficiently.

· Assess issues and determine when escalation or specialized support is needed.

General Maintenance

· Assist with building systems and duties as needed, including basic carpentry, painting, light HVAC and electrical troubleshooting.

· Provide event setup support when requested.

Plumbing & Water Systems

· Perform advanced plumbing maintenance, including reading schematics and as-built drawings, identifying isolation valves, and making repairs.

· Install, maintain, and repair water lines, drains, valves, faucets, toilets, and related fixtures.

· Perform copper pipe sweating, PVC and PEX work, and snake clogged drains.

· Conduct preventative inspections of plumbing systems and fixtures.

Pool & Fountain Maintenance

· Inspect and maintain circulation systems, pumps, filters, heaters, timers, and chlorinators for pools and fountains.

· Monitor and adjust water chemistry to meet health and safety standards.

· Conduct seasonal opening and closing procedures, including winterization and start-up.

· Troubleshoot mechanical and water quality issues.

· Keep logs of maintenance routines and water chemistry results.

Working Conditions

· Require standing, bending, climbing, lifting up to 50 pounds, and working on ladders or at heights.

· Work may occur indoors and outdoors, in varying weather and temperature conditions.

· Exposure to pool chemicals, noise, and mechanical equipment is expected.

· May be required to work flexible hours including evenings, weekends, or on-call shifts for emergencies.

Required Qualifications

· High school diploma or equivalent.

· Valid Class E driver’s license (or equivalent from another state).

· Must be available 24/7 for emergencies and willing to work overtime.

Preferred Qualifications

Technical training or certification in plumbing or aquatic facility operations preferred. Five years or more of experience in facilities or water systems maintenance, preferably with pools and/or fountains.

Position Summary

Perform routine systems checks and emergency maintenance as dispatched by public safety and supervisors. Will be responsible for all building-related problems while also ensuring the operations of HVAC systems.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

HVAC System Monitoring and Inspection

· Inspect building HVAC systems for proper operation and record relevant data in the rounds logbooks.

· Must have the ability to troubleshoot and repair the Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning systems within a multi-building complex. Duties include an in-depth understanding of the principles and operation of the heating and cooling systems.

· Must be able to make repairs (brazing), reclaim refrigerants, and recharge units as needed

· Ability to use computer software and Building Automation Systems to adjust settings for both comfort and energy saving settings.

· Diagnose and Repair and service of boilers both steam and water

· Record and document equipment data based on equipment surveys

They should understand medical math, canine and feline anatomy/physiology, and be able to appropriately handle and restrain animals using fear-free and/or feline-friendly methods. Effective, professional, and positive with all individuals, including internal and external customers/clients, is essential.

The well-qualified candidate will also possess a bachelor’s degree in veterinary technology, biomedical science, animal science, or related area, at least one year experience in a veterinary medical setting, and a certification as a Licensed Veterinary Technician (LVT).

Some of the Responsibilities Include:

• Orthopedic Responsibilities: Prepares patients for aseptic surgery, serves as a scrub nurse during orthopedic procedures (including arthroscopies, TPLOs and fracture repairs), and assists with scheduling surgical procedures and communicates to all areas of the hospital, including with clients and referring veterinarians. • Teaching and Clinical Research: Participates in the instruction of technical skills in labs, seminars, and clinical and basic research programs as needed. Assists with record keeping and data management and instructing and training of veterinary assistants and student technicians.
• Anesthesia Responsibilities: Maintains anesthetic levels and analgesia for orthopedic procedures, performs intravenous catheterization, monitors and records patients’ physiological data and administered medications, assists in anesthetic recoveries. Performs and instructs regional blocks, recognizes and treats hypotension, hypothermia, and other physiological abnormalities, recognizes cardiac arrhythmias, recognizes and treats perioperative and postoperative pain.
• Maintains Work Environment: Maintains a sanitary and well-organized service within the Veterinary Medical teaching hospital, restocks supplies and medical inventory, cleans and repackages items for sterilization specific to the service, and maintains equipment.
• Training, Compliance, and Administrative: Remains current with safety classes, rabies prophylaxis, Radiation safety training, Infection Control, Aseptic Technique and maintains certification or licensure where appropriate. Ensures all hospital fees are correctly captured and entered into the hospital electronic medical records system. Assists with school and hospital accreditations and certifications; AHAA, AVMA, AALAC, IACUC, etc.

The Lloyd Veterinary Medical Center offers evaluation, medical care, and surgical treatment to animals with urgent medical needs 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

The LVMC provides specialized care and comprehensive medical and surgical services for companion and large animals throughout Iowa and surrounding states. Our clinicians, residents and interns, technicians, staff, and senior veterinary students work in teams to provide 24-hour, state-of-the-art care to animal patients.

Successful candidates hired into a Veterinary Technician I/II/III position in the College of Veterinary Medicine’s Small Animal Intensive Care Unit between 2/1/2025 and 6/30/2026 may be eligible to receive a recruitment incentive of $1,000. Payment terms and conditions will be provided in a payment agreement. 

This Level I position provides care and assistance to patients under the supervision of Clinicians and House Officers at Iowa State University Lloyd Veterinary Medical Center within the Small Animal Emergency and Critical Care Department. Responsibilities include the ability to proficiently perform technical skills, provide nursing care to small animal ICU patients, and coordinate and assist with patient diagnostics, procedures, and other necessary treatments. Instruct and demonstrate veterinary care and technical skills to 4th-year veterinary students.

The successful candidate will be well-rounded and possess multitasking skills to triage and help stabilize incoming ER patients. The candidate will also provide advanced nursing care to small animal ICU patients with the ability to recognize changes in the health of an animal. They should demonstrate attention to detail and have excellent communication skills to effectively interact with students, faculty, house officers, and staff members.

Under the direction and supervision of a licensed Veterinarian, it provides advanced care for ill and injured animal patients or animals used in a clinical or hospital setting.

Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the U.S. on an on-going basis without sponsorship. 

Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities

• Assists with basic nursing care on American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) physical status classification level I and II patients, which are considered healthy or with mild systemic disease. Nursing care includes but is not limited to monitoring body functions (temperature, respiration, heartbeat, amount and frequency of food consumptions, defecation, urination, etc.) and noting abnormalities; placing and maintaining intravenous catheters; administering fluids and medications orally, parenterally, and enterally; and performing other basic treatments.

• Collects and processes samples for research, diagnostic, and clinical purposes.

• Assists with basic preparatory procedures on various animal species and assists staff members in surgical, medical, or laboratory procedure preparation, including instrument and supply set up.

• Administers anesthesia and monitors patient response through the recovery period for ASA I-II patients.

• Maintains orderly and sanitary work areas for clinical, teaching, and research facilities.

• Stocks and organize patient exam rooms, treatment areas, holding areas and operating rooms.

• May assist with entering hospital costs and medical records into the computer to create accurate records for billing accounts.

• Assists with setting up, inventory, maintenance, security, and repairs for equipment and instruments used in surgical procedures, emergencies, and/or lab sessions.

• Utilizes ultrasound machines and x-rays, assist with MRI, or other related imaging equipment for patient diagnostics.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Knowledge of animal health and welfare – animal isolation, sample collection, medical treatment, nursing and monitoring, pre & post-surgical requirements including room and supply preparation.

• Knowledge of pharmacology – dosage, calculations, and usage.

• Knowledge of animal husbandry – animal feeding, watering, grooming, handling, safe transporting, and environmental requirements.

• Knowledge of record maintenance – collecting and recording data.

• Knowledge of trimming, clipping, or grooming animals.

• Knowledge of teaching and/or demonstration of safe animal handling.

• Knowledge of regulatory requirements (Animal Welfare Act, Public Health Service, etc.).

• Ability to handle, restrain, move, load, and unload animals.

• Ability to administer medication – topical, injectable, oral, and rectal.

• Ability to check and interpret vital signs.

• Ability to lift, carry, push, or pull up to 70 pounds.

• Ability to instruct and demonstrate veterinary techniques in handling, grooming, and nursing animals.

• Ability to interact in a professional capacity.

• Ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with others.

• Ability to prioritize daily tasks.

• Ability to work in high stress environments.

• Knowledge of computers, computerized medical record systems, and word processing software, such as Microsoft Word and Excel.
