Department Statement

We are an equal opportunity employer. The College of Arts & Letters is particularly interested in candidates of all backgrounds who are committed to the principle that intellectual leadership is achieved through open access and pro-active inclusion. We particularly welcome applications from women, people of color, LGBTQI individuals, and others who are traditionally underrepresented in the academy.

More about Taller Entre Aguas

Taller Entre Aguas (TEA) is a digital humanities lab and project that is expanding the ways Puerto Ricans gather and think together, building a theorization of “Black Puerto Rican data,” and creating communities of knowledge around Caribbean and Black DH methods. TEA began as a micro lab within the Dr. Jessica Johnson’s Community Knowledge Lab (CKL) under the umbrella of the Mellon-funded Diaspora Solidarities Lab and was seeded out at the end of 2024.

We are interested in immersing ourselves in Black digital humanities and Caribbean digital practices and priorities. TEA originally consisted of three main projects: The Registro Project, the Criadas Project, and the Libertos Project. TEA, headed by Dr. Sarah Bruno, is a curated transnational team of junior scholars deeply invested in ancestral reverence. Although the projects deal with different data and subject matter, the 1872 Slave Registry, census records, and police records, along with manumission materials and miscellaneous archival documents regarding the process of emancipation, respectively, these projects are channeled together by their shared preoccupation with the re-presentation, accessibility, and scholarly inquiry of data. We are concerned with the Black lives we input into our spreadsheets. It is for and with the (Afro)Puerto Rican community that continues to show up to our events and generate conversations, the elders, the students, and the independent genealogists, that Taller Entre Aguas continues to code digital memory in the form of spreadsheets and websites from cold paper, sterilized and sanitized by colonial ledger keepers.

During this next phase of Taller Entre Aguas, lab members will continue working on and completing the Registro Project and Libertos Project. The successful predoctoral applicant will assist the TEA team with planning logistics for a Summer Field School that will focus on creating a digital component for the PROPA (Puerto Rican Organization for the Performing Arts) Lugares Históricos project.

The Summer Field School will be open to academic and non-academic participants (about 20 total). It will teach digital humanities skills so that we can collaboratively create an online map of each historical site with the accompanying oral histories, transcriptions, and photographs, as well as travel to the sites to place the QR code that visitors can scan to lead them to the website as well as learn about other historical sites in the PROPA Lugares Históricos network. The Summer Field School will be two weeks; lodging, food, travel, and a modest stipend will be provided for each participant.

MSU Statement

Michigan State University has been advancing the common good with uncommon will for more than 160 years. One of the top research universities in the world, MSU pushes the boundaries of discovery and forges enduring partnerships to solve the most pressing global challenges while providing life-changing opportunities to a diverse and inclusive academic community through more than 200 programs of study in 17 degree-granting colleges.

Description of Work

The Discipline-Based Education Research in Engineering (DBER-E) faculty group in the College of Engineering at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL) is accepting applications for a cohort of three Postdoctoral Fellows for the NSF-funded 3-Cs DBER-E Postdoctoral Fellows Program (Award #2430498). The overarching goal of this two-year postdoctoral fellowship program is to provide participants with the training and practice necessary to navigate the early years of an engineering faculty career. More specifically, the program is designed to train individuals who consciously and confidently span the disciplinary boundaries between engineering education, engineering, social sciences, and DBER (in STEM more broadly) using effective communication, collaboration, and coordination (3-Cs) skills to elevate research, teaching, and service activity in traditional engineering academic settings. As a cohort, fellows will join a thriving DBER-E community in which the faculty are embedded in their disciplinary departments. At the completion of this program, fellows will be prepared to apply for faculty positions where they will be engineering education researchers embedded within engineering disciplines.

It is expected that during Year 1, the fellows will spend most of their time working on a structured research project with one of the DBER-E mentors while developing a plan for an independent DBER-E project that they can execute during their two-year fellowship. In Year 2, fellows will (1) launch their research agenda with a project that will put them on an accelerated track to research funding success, (2) build boundary-spanning skills while working with one or more faculty in the engineering departments to conduct research, and (3) generate preliminary data for an early-career grant proposal (e.g., NSF CAREER, IUSE, RFE, etc.). Over the course of two years, fellows will have the opportunity to participate in the following activities:

Work with a mentor on an active research project.

Design and implement an independent research project.

Mentor graduate and undergraduate researchers.

Engage in disciplinary teaching.

Engage in future faculty professional development activities (e.g., 3-Cs fundamentals, job document development, writing a research grant, research network broadening both nationally and internationally).

Present research nationally and internationally.

Fellows will receive a competitive compensation package that includes benefits, travel to a national conference each year, travel to an international conference in Year 2, up to $6,000 in moving expenses, and computer and supplies. NSF requires DBER-E postdocs to be US citizens or permanent residents.

As an EO/AA employer, the University of Nebraska considers qualified applicants for employment without regard to race, color, ethnicity, national origin, sex, pregnancy, sexual orientation, gender identity, religion, disability, age, genetic information, veteran status, marital status, and/or political affiliation. See https://equity.unl.edu/notice-nondiscrimination/.

Minimum Required Qualifications

U.S. citizen or permanent resident.

Ph.D. in engineering education or Ph.D. in another field with an engineering education dissertation topic (complete by August 2025 and not prior to August 2022).

Interest in DBER.

B.S. or M.S. in an engineering field.

Experience conducting qualitative and/or mixed methods research.

Strong writing and organizational skills.

Ability to manage multiple tasks concurrently.

Ability to be a self-directed researcher.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience and/or interest in:

This is a term position; length of the term will be discussed during the interview process. Continuation past the term length discussed will be based on university need, performance, and/or availability of funding.

POSITION SPECIFICS

Postdoctoral Scholar – Pennsylvania Science & Technology Policy AI Fellow (STP AI Fellow)

The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania Science & Technology Policy (COPA-STEP) Program, part of the Law, Policy and Engineering (LPE) Initiative in the College of Engineering, is recruiting for a one-year Science & Technology Policy Fellowship focused on Artificial Intelligence (AI). The STP AI Fellow will embed with the nonpartisan staff of the Joint State Government Commission (JSGC) in Harrisburg, PA, for twelve months starting June 2025. The STP AI Scholar is expected to work in-office at JSGC for the first six months of employment.

The STP AI Fellow will equip the JSGC, the bicameral and bipartisan research agency of the Pennsylvania General Assembly, with the expert knowledge needed to detail comprehensively the current and potential future impact of AI in Pennsylvania and enable the Pennsylvania General Assembly to make sound, data-driven policy and decisions on the social, ethical, and economic implications of this emerging technology.

The Pennsylvania General Assembly is the largest full-time legislature in the nation, and regularly deals with science or technology-related issues, including AI. Yet, legislators and staff, as well as advisory bodies like the JSGC lack science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) expertise. Pennsylvania Science and Technology Policy Fellows help bridge this gap to provide science and technical expertise to lawmakers.

To ensure a successful year, the STP AI Fellow will receive training from LPE/COPA-STEP in Pennsylvania state government, the Pennsylvania policy process, policy writing instruction, communicating science and technology to non-scientific audiences, and on how to be an “honest broker”, i.e., providing evidence-based, objective, and nonpartisan advice that helps expand or clarify the choices for decision-making in an unbiased way. The JSGC will manage the day-to-day work of the fellow.

Responsibilities

The primary job functions and responsibilities of the STP AI Fellow are:

Conduct and synthesize research, write and edit reports, and create policy recommendations on AI or related topics as assigned by the JSGC.

Meet both in-person and virtually with experts and stakeholders who have experience in the areas of the topic being studied.

Manage schedule and workflow to ensure reports are completed in a timely manner.

Work in team settings.

Assist in preparing meeting materials including presentations and attend meetings, seminars, conferences, and other events at the direction of the JSGC.

Perform other office and administrative functions as needed.

Attend training, and weekly or bi-weekly check-ins with LPE/COPA-STEP and provide feedback, as requested. Support occasional LPE/COPA-STEP programming.

Preferred Skills

Preferred candidates will have strong quantitative empirical research and data visualization skills. In addition, preferred candidates will have exceptional writing skills, the ability to communicate with nontechnical audiences and translate complex ideas into easily digestible information, take initiative and manage their time well.

Qualifications

Applicants are required to have a Ph.D. or equivalent doctorate in an appropriate field and be able to provide evidence that all requirements have been met for completion of the Ph.D. prior to the effective date of hire. Appropriate fields would include Engineering, Computer Science, Political Science and other relevant education. Additionally, a minimum of three years of relevant professional experience is preferred. Employment will require successful completion of background checks in accordance with university policies.

How to Apply

To apply, candidates should provide 1) a cover letter summarizing their background, relevant skills, goals, interest in the position, and their contact information; 2) a current resume; and 3) names and contact information for three references. Review of applications will begin immediately and continue until the position is filled.

BACKGROUND CHECKS/CLEARANCES

Employment with the University will require successful completion of background check(s) in accordance with University policies.

The Guna lab at the University of California, San Francisco (https://www.gunalab.org/) is looking for a postdoctoral scholar to lead projects focused on how membrane proteins get made in human cells. Approximately one quarter of the eukaryotic proteome consists of membrane proteins. This extremely diverse class, encompassing GPCRs, viral proteins, neurotransmitter receptors, and immune receptors, play essential roles in all aspects of cellular physiology. Understanding how these proteins are made is not only a fundamental problem in cell biology, but has far ranging implication across fields from neuroscience to pharmacology. The lab is specifically focused on two sites of membrane protein biogenesis: the endoplasmic reticulum, and the mitochondria. We use a combination of high-throughput genomic techniques, cell biology, and biochemistry to understand how the biophysically complex human membrane proteome is manufactured and regulated across cell types. Candidates should have a creative and rigorous approach to scientific research, and should be open to tackling new projects in a collaborative environment.

Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis.

Key Responsibilities

Lead an interdisciplinary research project integrating functional genomics and mechanistic biochemistry to understand how membrane proteins are made in mammalian cells

Design experiments, interpret data, write manuscripts, present research at scientific conferences, and gain mentorship experience

Preferred Qualifications

Experience with core methods of cell biology and biochemistry including: cloning, mammalian cell culture, flow cytometry, protein analysis, basic biochemistry, and protein purification

Candidates with experience in high-throughput CRISPR screening and experience with membrane protein manipulation are encouraged to apply

Job Description:

Summary of Duties and Responsibilities:

Our goal in this Air Force funded project is to provide proof-of-principle results for the development of a transformative, nondestructive, universally applicable, method of super-resolution imaging capable of measuring the positions of molecules separated by distances of 10 nanometers or less. The ultimate goal is to rely upon two-photon interference of quantum-mechanically entangled Stokes and anti-Stokes photons and methods of quantum estimation.

The duties will entail either:

using entangled spontaneously down-converted photons and Hong-Ou-Mandel (HOM) interferometry to demonstrate enhancement of spatial resolution beyond the Heisenberg Limit

demonstrating the generation of entangled Stokes and anti-Stokes photons from chemical, biological, or any material of interest—the only limitation being the existence of a vibrational mode ≥ 1000 cm-1–and determining their suitability for obtaining super-resolution imaging by HOM interferometry.

Preferred candidates will have a strong background in experimental and computational aspects of either quantum optics or of molecular spectroscopy as well as experience working with lasers, optics, EMCCDs and SPADs.

This position is available for extension based on available funding.

Required Minimum Qualifications:
