Do you have a Master’s degree and are looking for fully funded PhD opportunities? Leibniz Institute, Germany is now accepting applications for several funded PhD programs across a range of research areas.

1. Fully Funded PhD

Summary of Funded PhD Program

The project will investigate patterns of hyperactivity using electrophysiological methods, which occur with aging and lead to altered long-range and local synaptic function and subsequent aberrant network excitability along with associated memory deficits. Specifically, the candidate will investigate the underlying contribution of cell-type specific projections within hippocampal-cortical circuits in mice and characterize the synaptic changes within long-range versus local cortical circuits across aging.

2. Fully Funded PhD

Summary of Funded PhD Program

We want to investigate samples that exhibit unconventional superconductivity or unusual magnetic ground states, such as spin liquids. Such new magnetic states can be obtained by suppressing conventional magnetic order by introduction of quantum fluctuations, frustration, or competing interactions. The aim of the doctoral research is an experimental study of new emerging magnetic or superconducting materials with strong electronic correlations or magnetic frustration, especially those involving topological features such as spin liquids or phases close to them.

4. Fully Funded PhD in Ultrafast Resonant Magnetic X-ray Scattering

Summary of Funded PhD Program

Magnetism is an essential part of current and future technologies, e.g. for storing and processing information, and is still one of the most fascinating and far-reaching phenomena in contemporary physics. Today, scientists utilize ultrashort light pulses to trigger and follow the most fundamental magnetic interactions on the relevant femto- to picosecond time scales, which generally also lead to a nanoscale spatial rearrangement of magnetization. The goal of the offered PhD position is to directly access the ultrafast evolution of spatially inhomogeneous spin profiles to gain a detailed picture of the underlying light-driven processes.

5. Fully Funded PhD in Multilayered 2D quantum artificial heterostructures

Summary of Funded PhD Program

By controlling the relative orientation of one layer with respect to another, van der Waals materials have revolutionized the field of material science. The twist degree of freedom has enabled the exploration of strongly correlated matter and quantum phase transitions between insulating, magnetic, and superconducting states. The experimental control over inert systems, such as graphene, is tremendous, and recently, multilayered architectures have been realized with a high degree of electronic control. However, the chemistry of graphene is relatively simple as it is made up of only carbon atoms.

6. Fully Funded PhD in Molecular docking

Summary of Funded PhD Program

Advancements in structural biology and AI-guided protein structure design are providing new insights into the structures of receptors responsible for food taste and odor perception. The project aims to make use of the structural information of the receptors for structure-based ligand design projects in order to develop prediction methods to identify new food-derived modulators of taste and odorant receptors.

7. Fully Funded PhD in Chemoinformatics and machine learning

Summary of Funded PhD Program

The straightforward identification of chemosensory active molecules in food is largely hampered by the complex food composition, which can lead to masking effects and molecular interactions in the food matrix. The applicant will work on the development of machine learning prediction models for the identification of food-derived taste and odor active compounds.

8. Fully Funded PhD in Structural Chemistry & Computational Biophysics

Summary of Funded PhD Program

Two-pore-domain potassium (K2P) channels are critical for regulating the resting membrane potential and controlling cellular excitability in various cell types. Dysregulation of these channels has been implicated in various pathophysiological conditions, including atrial fibrillation, respiratory depression, pulmonary hypertension, sleep apnea, neuropathic pain, migraine, and depression, making them attractive targets for drug development. In this project, we aim to investigate the gating mechanism of K2P channels and to develop selective modulators using a combination of electrophysiology, solid-state NMR, cryo-electron microscopy, and large-scale molecular dynamics simulations.

9. Fully Funded PhD

Summary of Funded PhD Program

Recently, it was found that Herbertsmithite exhibits quantum spin liquid properties and thus the growth of high quality crystals became of great interest. At SIMaP (CNRS) in Grenoble crystals are grown from solution and the growth is investigated by in-situ optical microscopy. In an ANR-DFG French-German joint project we want to investigate the growth kinetics in more detail by advanced in-situ techniques (Grenoble) and numerical simulations of the step growth by means of kinetic Monte Carlo method (IKZ). At IKZ a kinetic Monte Carlo tool has been developed in the programming language julia. This allows a very flexible use and extension.

10. Fully Funded PhD

Summary of Funded PhD Program

Semiconductor-based power electronics is a key technology for solving the greatest challenge facing society – sustainable energy generation. In addition to the conversion of energy generation to renewable and decentralized sources, the efficient use of energy is the most important lever for achieving sustainability goals in the energy sector. More efficient power electronics not only help to reduce harmful emissions through more efficient use of energy, but also increase the cost-effectiveness of energy-intensive processes. Gallium oxide (Ga2O3) is currently the subject of intensive research and development activities in the field of semiconductor power electronics.
