1. Fully Funded PhD in Computational Cardiology

Summary of Funded PhD Program

Are you excited about the role of personalized computer simulations in transforming clinical care? As a PhD candidate, you will develop innovative methods to virtually optimize pacemaker settings to the needs of the patient’s heart using Digital Twin technology—just as Formula 1 teams use simulators to enhance race performance. Through the development of Digital Twins of patients’ hearts, based on baseline data from a multicentre clinical study, you will create computational models that can predict how different pacing strategies will change a patient’s cardiac pump function.

2. Fully Funded PhD in synthesis & evaluation of biobased, responsive and self-dispersible waterborne resins

Summary of Funded PhD Program

Plastics have their drawbacks: their production consumes energy and leads to greenhouse gas emissions; they are made from non-sustainable materials; they do not decompose; and less than 10% are recycled. Much progress has been made in making plastics more sustainable for larger applications. However, thin films, such as those used in coatings and inks, are lagging behind. The SusInkCoat project is changing that. Researchers are developing new materials, processes and applications to improve the durability, functionality and recyclability of coatings, thin films and inks. In addition, the consortium is training a new generation of chemical developers for whom sustainability and circularity are core values.

3. Fully Funded PhD

Summary of Funded PhD Program

Join our cutting-edge project focused on advancing the future of flame retardant (FR) plastics! We are seeking a motivated PhD candidate to explore the degradation, processing, and recycling of polypropylene (PP) combined with innovative phosphorus-sulfur flame retardants. Despite their promising performance at low concentrations, P-S FRs are not yet commercially viable due to unknown decomposition mechanisms that hinder recyclability. This interdisciplinary research aims to unravel these mechanisms and establish a scientific foundation for developing new PP/FR materials with improved recyclability, ultimately contributing to sustainable practices in electronics and transportation industries.

4. Fully Funded PhD in Optimizing high-density crop cultivation

Summary of Funded PhD Program

The success of plant cultivation is the product of genetics, the environmental conditions and growth management. Optimized crop production is especially important when efficient use of space and energy is required such is the case of indoor crops. This research project aims to identify the genetic bottlenecks of efficiency gain of indoor lettuce production in horizontal and vertical hydroculture systems. Plant growth responses to different environmental conditions will be tested in high-tech climate rooms and related to the genetic composition of the tested lettuce varieties. Based on the observations, the role of specific genes will be tested, either through mutagenesis, or through crosses between lettuce varieties with identified traits.

10. Fully Funded PhD in Automated Knowledge Graphs for Kidney Physiology and Pathology

Summary of Funded PhD Program

In silico models aim to capture and elucidate the complex and emergent interactions of biological systems, with the goal of expediting research and potential clinical translation. For example, ordinary differential equation (ODE) models of toxin and drug transport are being developed to bring safer therapies to chronic kidney disease patients. Despite recent progress, these cutting-edge ODEs only model transport in steady state and remain limited regarding the amount and complexity of dynamic transport mechanisms as it is often not clear which kinetic relation is most suitable.
