The Laboratory for Social and Neural Systems Research (Group Leaders: E. Fehr, T. Hare, C. Ruff, P. Tobler) is a research center at the University of Zurich that investigates the principles underlying social and neuronal systems (Laboratory for Social and Neural Systems Research (SNS Lab)). The lab brings together scientists from the social and natural sciences (incl. neuroscience, economics, psychology, computer science, and physics) to study mechanistic links between neuronal circuits, human behavior and social interactions, using a combination of brain imaging methods, neuro-modulation techniques (brain stimulation and neuropharmacology), behavioral experiments and computational approaches.

4. Fully Funded PhD in Evolutionary and ontogenetic foundations of modern body form
Summary of Funded PhD Program
The project aims to analyse the known Homo erectus skeletons using advanced virtual imaging techniques and modern reference samples to explore aspects such as evolutionary changes in body proportions and growth trajectories, skeletal development, pathology, and biomechanical adaptations in response to bipedalism. Successful candidates will have the opportunity to collect data abroad and present their findings at international conferences, as well as to collaborate in other projects of the group. In addition, they will assist in teaching as well as in training and mentoring of students.

6. Fully Funded PhD in Theological Ethics

The research cluster “Conspiracy Theories in Online Environments and Their Religious Connotations”, which will run from January 1, 2025, is one of four sub-areas of the URPP and deals with the influence of digitalization on the dynamics of conspiracy theory communication in the digital space as well as with determining the relationship between digitality, religion and conspiracy theories from a religious studies, linguistics and ethical perspective.

The Epidemiology and Geography Group at the One Health Institute, University of Zurich, is looking for a PhD candidate interested in developing geospatial models to map antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in animals as well as accessibility to veterinary services worldwide. The position is for four years. The One Health Institute (OHI) is an interfaculty institute founded jointly by the Vetsuisse Faculty, the Faculty of Medicine, and the Faculty of Science at the University of Zurich. The Epidemiology and Geography group focuses on assembling large databases and developing methods to map infectious diseases. Our primary interest is on mapping antimicrobial resistance in low- and middle-income countries.

For this project, we are seeking a PhD candidate who will answer the above question by conducting online and offline field research on a self-selected case. A dissertation project that, in addition to aligning with the project’s thematic focus, also incorporates an Islamic perspective is desirable but not mandatory.

For this project, we are looking for a doctoral student who, on the basis of online and offline field research, will answer the above question using an example for a case of their own choosing. A doctoral project that, in addition to being focused on the project topic, is also characterized by a reference to Islam is desirable, but not mandatory.
