Do you have a Master’s degree and are looking for fully funded PhD opportunities? The University of Southern Denmark, Denmark is now accepting applications for several funded PhD programs across a range of research areas.
1. Fully Funded PhD in Political Science; Border Region and European Studies
Summary of Funded PhD Program
As a PhD student, you will be affiliated with the Centre for Border Region Studies (CBRS), a research institution located in Sønderborg. The aim of the Centre is to promote comparative aspects of European border regions in research, teaching, and dissemination. The CBRS is the only research centre in border studies in Denmark and is responsible for the European Studies bachelor programme. The Centre is part of the International and Regional Politics (IRP) research section and of the Department of Political Science and Public Management.
Application Deadline: 10/11/2024

2. Fully Funded PhD in Political Science
Summary of Funded PhD Program
The Public Administration, Welfare and Politics research section is comprised of the two research fields public administration and welfare studies. The scholars focus on various research areas within public management and administration, comparative welfare studies and social policy as well as comparative politics and political economy. The section also provides high-quality, research-based teaching and supervision in the political science study program and the two professional master study programs in public management, and they disseminate research-based knowledge to key stakeholders.
Application Deadline: 15 October 2024
3. Fully Funded PhD in Public Administration
Summary of Funded PhD Program
Applicants are expected to include a proposal for an original research project within public administration (we are especially looking for a candidate with interest in public management and leadership or use of AI/digitalization in the public sector). When preparing the proposal, you are strongly advised to consider the research profile and the staff of the Public Administration, Welfare and Politics Section at the Department. Applicants are strongly encouraged to consult the general guidelines for preparing a project proposal at the PhD School’s webpage, and to familiarize themselves with the departments’ Scholarly Qualification Matrix.

4. Fully Funded PhD in Error Mitigation Strategies for Quantum Chemistry on Noisy Intermediate-scale Quantum Computers
Summary of Funded PhD Program
Traditional quantum chemical methods possess well-known limitations concerning both the accuracy and size of the molecular systems to be studied. Methods based on quantum computing are believed to be particularly well suited for simulating quantum systems like molecules and may enable a significant computational speed-up. However, given the existence of conventional numerical methods that have been refined over decades, it is still uncertain if quantum algorithms in practice indeed can provide a genuine quantum advantage over established techniques.
Application Deadline: 10/15/2024
5. Fully Funded PhD
Summary of Funded PhD Program
The successful candidate will conduct cutting-edge research on one or more of the above-mentioned topics, under the supervision of one of the center’s key-investigators, Profs. N. Asger Mortensen, Joel D. Cox, and Christos Tserkezis. Applicants for the PhD position should have a bachelor’s degree in natural or technical sciences and should have completed (or provide proof of imminent completion) a relevant master’s degree. Prior research on the research topics of POLIMA is appreciated but not a prerequisite. The duration of the contract is three years, in accordance with national legislation. Demonstrated potential for excellent research.

6. Fully Funded PhD in Quantitative Modelling for Just-in-Time Port Call Optimization
Summary of Funded PhD Program
The essential part of the project is to enhance and assure timely communication and that the right information is provided to the right people to the right time in the right format – which may sound easy in our times of digitization and information sharing on mobile or other devices, but to get this information is tricky as the maritime supply chain is highly complex with many stakeholders involved. The aim of the project is to provide solutions that can be integrated into existing systems and are able to calculate and provide this information based on terminology and calculation methods defined by agreed standards.
Application Deadline: October 15, 2024
7. Fully Funded PhD in Building Stock Characterisation and Circularity Aspects as Factors in Material Output Valuation
Summary of Funded PhD Program
The PhD project at University of Southern Denmark (research project 3c) is part of the response to the third objective, ‘Value of the building that is mobile’. This project will study how features of circularity contribute to the value of materials during the urban mining of buildings and the phase of material mobility between an old and new destination, using quantum concepts. The objective of 3c is to explore, develop, and test the environmental and social values of demountable materials on their many potential circular destinations, considering exchangeability, destination flexibility, and reconfigurability. Furthermore, the aim of project 3c is to develop knowledge on how higher levels of circularity, like rethink and restore, can be included in material output valuation. As well as a dissertation, and a number of academic papers, the project will produce an accessible report for real estate professionals.

8. Fully Funded PhD in Multi-level Material Cycles and Market Dynamics
Summary of Funded PhD Program
The PhD project at University of Southern Denmark (research project 3b) is part of the response to the third objective, ‘Value of the building that is mobile’. The valuation of building materials is crucial, and complex because of the volatility of building material markets. Parallel to project 3a, this project will further explore how the material cycles (e.g., production, manufacturing, use, and end-of-life management) and market dynamics (e.g., demand and supply of scrap in the building and non-building sectors) will affect the value of demounted building material. For example, fast-growing steel scrap from the transport sector will influence the supply and thus market economics of building steel recycling.
Application Deadline: October 19, 2024
9. Fully Funded PhD in Multi-layer Building Stocks Characterisation and Circular Economy Potential
Summary of Funded PhD Program
The PhD project at University of Southern Denmark (research project 3a) is part of the response to the Third objective, ‘Value of the building that is mobile’. The scale and quality of the existing building stock are the key determinants for stock upgrade and new construction. They indirectly determine the level of demolition and thus affect changes in building life expectancy. Understanding the quantity and quality of future construction and demolition waste and potentials of various CE strategies (including but not limited to material recycling and component reuse) requires high-resolution characterisation of the building stock.
